This is my first time ever painting a dragon. I tried to use a bunch of different animal references to help me come up with his anatomy. I kind of like the way it turned out, but I think that I have a bit more to go before I can create a really convincing dragon. Anyway, I'd appreciate any helpful comments, critiques or paint-overs you guys could give me.

well here goes. Hope Im nto being to harsh, but this is what I would do to the image. Im not saying anything is wrong with the image, its great. but these are just some suggestions to make it look better
the dragons hands are positond kind of odd, they look like they have no form, like the hand thats closest to the viewer, the finger seems to be bent way the heck back, try to repositon the fingers. dragons tend to get larger as you go down their body until you get to the tail, right now it looks to have the body of an dog of some animal that walks on all floors ( which is accounted by the fact you said you used other animals as refrence), try to widen him in the rear. I think the smoke should be moving more in the direction that the dragon is moving. and just to make the overal effect better you should make the dragons wings slightly translucent.
Hope that helps |

i like the picture. But i think you should chanhe the colors because i don't kie them, they look like it's some kind of cartoon. Ive played with saturation and contrast and this is what ive come up with. Hope you like it.

I have a question.
With this technique in grass...how do you all do it. Now I realize the long time consuming approach....paint them all individualy, but is that how you do it? Or is this done with a paint programs copy paste/stamp/layers?
Cuz...that grass looks good, but I would never paint all that by single strokes....maybe thats why my art isn't amazing. |

Most likly he used a costom brush for the grass. They are easy to make and very usful for rendering a picture. |

Actually I found the colors to be nice. The palette for the grass reminded me of eyewoo's. The sky might be a little too saturated in the blues tho.
The only thing I find disturbing is the funky perspective with the wings.
The anatomy in the arms and hands are unusual (as if the hands would have been switched).. It may perhaps take a litle too much of our attention and lose the focus of the whole picture.
The head (and eye) is really nice but I was also intruiged by the perspective of those spikes.
Anyho, I like the level of detailing you put in your picture as well as the bold colours (- the sky). ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Funk Master Kane: Some interesting things to look into, thanks for pointing them out.
oDD: No offense, but the colors in your version look nasty...Maybe it's just personal preference, but I like the bright colors.
Raytrace Man: All of the pieces of grass were hand painted in Painter 7.
RaykastCS: You know, maybe I should make some type of custom brush for it.
egerie: I know the wing perspective is odd, but it was the best I could come up with when I was struggling to draw them. I'm not sure how I would fix that. Same with the arms, though I'll play around with them and see if I can make them look more natural. |
