I am very excited. I just found out that I am accepted to the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design
I was wondering if anyone that has already been or currently going, could tell me a bit about what it’s like for the foundation year. |

I'm going to see if I can borrow a friend’s camera, then I’ll post some pics.
Here are a couple older pieces. They are not very good photos.
It’s not like my usual work though. I mainly draw pen and ink illustration, but they asked me to put a bit of abstract art in my portfolio. |

I went there, and their foundation program is the BOMB! Really awesome.
After that, though, it's pretty so-so. Their academic classes are a joke--I got an A+ in a third-year art history class I attended all of ONCE (to write the mid-term...they let me do the final via e-mail). A lot of the teachers care more about showing their work than teaching.... If you can, get into any drawing class KEN WALLACE is teaching. I cannot recommend KEN WALLACE enough. He absolutely rocks. Renee van Halm is also an excellent teacher...try to get her painting classes in 2nd and 3rd year. I had one of my senior studios with her, as well...she rules.
Avoid the evil woman whose name rhymes with Zyban. |

Emily Carr was the single biggest influence on my girlfriend's work. I love her work as well.
Congratulations for getting accepted! I wish you the best of luck. |

i've been thinking about going there myself. the school i went to was kind of crappy. didn't learn enough art related stuff
i've looked on there site a bit, but not indepth really. do they do any sort of continuing education sort of thing? can you take a select few of classes or does it have to be a full program? i'm guessing one also needs a good portfolio to get into the place too, right?
EDIT: oh yeah and congradulations there Unsound

Here's a hint for anyone who wants to get into Emily Carr:
They accept about one in twenty applicants, I think. To be one of those accepted, you do NOT need a particularly good portfolio. You don't even need to be competent. You should've seen some of the rubbish I sent them! There are two things you can do to make sure you get in:
1. Write a lot. Emphasize what you want to LEARN, not what you've already done/want to do.
2. Do something really original for the entry project. Back when I applied, that was the "Map Your Week" thing--not sure if they're still doing that, or if they've come up with something better by now. Anyway, that is the FIRST, and in some cases, the ONLY thing they look at, so that's where you need to impress 'em. |
