Another cool pic.
Something about the abrupt transition from the yellow light of the bolter fire to red after passing through the aliens lower jaw that looks kinda strange, and the background looks a bit 2D. But the overall image still rocks. |

Nice work, background's fine with me btw.
One thing i can't figure out is the alien - they're 40k spacemarines alright, but is that a new tyranid? :] |

Thanks guys-
Gimbal8 those are some good points. Since I've never fired a bolter through an alien's jaw, I couldn't decide whether to make it like a bullet hole or a bazooka. I probably should go more bazooka. I'll post a new version with a different background.
Thanks Little Bee, master of creepy mutated ink drawings.
Glad you like it Tab. Actually I'm just goofing around. I told the art director I wanted to do Tyranids but they gave me Space Marines. I sketched this creature with a huge mouth and decided it could maybe pass as some sort of Tyranid jungle mutation. It's really just an excuse to paint a huge toothy mouth, but it's not for a job. |

Here's the new version. It doesn't have as much texture, but I like it better. ![](http://home.earthlink.net/~monsterbox/review/blown%20away2.jpg) |

I think this version is much, much better! The bolter really looks powerful, too bad the damned game doesn't work this way (what?! How could that possibly fail to wound?!).
One crit though: the second marine is also firing rounds, but where are they going? It seems to me that if the first marine's shots went right through the beast, so would the second's. But maybe you kept it out to keep it simpler, not as cluttered.

Hey Kari,
Nice, I really like the improvements on the second one. Much more convincing, especially the bazooka blast. Who are you working for now, are you free lancing and doing CID?
ANyway sweet stuff. |

Okay here's version three. . . I wanted to develop the texture on the creature a bit more.
Jeise- Thanks man! I hate it when I do a new version and it doesn't improve much. Yeah, the bolter turned out being more powerful than I planned. The other guy just has your standard bolter, not the Gut Burster 2000.
Thanks Sharkman. My days at CID are numbered. I'm planning on doing fulltime freelance. Right now my favorite gig is with Sabertooth. |

The improvements are great. I really like the particle effects.
You could always say he is firing a hellfire round or something (although I think that special ammo used to be for heavy bolters, but hey...maybe a tech priest owed him a favor).
Must be great to sit around and paint 40k pics all day and get paid for it. I'm envious. |

all right, space marines!
great stuff
everything just looks great, but i do agree taht the bolter is too powerful, maybe make multiple hit points and wounds? but that may take away the focal point |

Great work Kari! I like it, the last is definetely an improvement I think, much more painterly looking.
Crits wise, maybe you could change the legs pose on the guys at the bottom abit, they seem a little too grounded for this creatures attack. If they were in a more running backwards pose, it may look better with the whole action/motion of the pic.
Also some harder light on the metal surfaces (gun/suit/etc) from the gun fire might be cool. |
