A friend of mine from work was wanting to give matte painting a try. So he grabed a pic from the net. I had no idea it was this small. I had to post this and see what you guys thought about it. This is the ACTUAL size he worked at.
BEFORE
AFTER
Here is what Mike B. had to say about his work:
"I want to learn about matt painting and could not find much info about it, so I decided to find a photo and take a few things out and paint a few things into it. Creg Mullins is as far as I am concerned, the best at this type of work."
C&C welcome |

Crezzy dude to paint at that size. Good job!
The only problem that springs to mind immediately is that he has put some bright-ish highlights in areas, which should be duller to suit the overcast day as indicated by the clouds. Specifically the building, the highlights above the windows.
Hope that helps. |

Shouldnt paint this small if you want to be a matte painter.
Let him try out working at 4,000x4,000 or higher.
You have to use different techniques.
I cant see much really did here. I know zilch about matte painting though. |

Umm.. you can't see much really done? It's almost an entirely different image now.
And thanks for the tip on what size mattes should be painted, Light. It seems as though sam is quite aware that this is far too tiny, as stated in his post. But again, thanks for clearing that up.
I think that the "highlights" above the windows are well-placed. Yea, it is an overcast day, but rays of light are obviously making it through the clouds. This is also shown in the shadow the figure is casting on the ground. No light = no shadow. I think this is very well done, for the amount of time he spent with it. The mood has been altered completely, which is usually one of the prime focuses of a matte painter.
Like Light, I'm no pro, but I can certainly see a drastic change in atmosphere within the two images. Nice work. |

then you're blind or stupid, he changed the sky, removed a building, drew in mountains, changed the person in the foreground, added foreground grass and buildings in the left background, among other changes. |

Heh, you make it sound like he just used some magic brush to remove the buildings and reveal the mountains and sky... Sounds like a cool tool actually, I guess it will be added to PS8 along with the "Add Realism" and "Make Art" filters

Just wanted to pop in and say hi, Samdragon. How've you been?
This image: The grass in the foreground looks fine to me; it definitely fools my eyes. The hills in the background look a little fake. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe the contrast is to low? Maybe the clouds are too sharp compared to the hills?
Anyway, it's well done. I'd like to stay informed as you and your friend learn more about this art. Take care |

Pixel: Where in the post does Samdragon say that he knew this was too small?
Other dude:
Okay, I you are right. He did change a lot of stuff. But I don't see much stuff added. Its mostly stuff removed. I also don't think it looks photorealistic. A little fadey.
But, I think one main thing a matte painter does is add photorealistic stuff. This is what I've seen from Craigs work.
Anyway, like I said ask someon who matte paints. This isn't my area. |
