"Wired"

This was an exercise of sorts.
I decided to break away from the norm for a second and step out of my "comfort zone".
I wanted to keep in touch with my roots and do some drawing. I've been painting so much lately that I wanted to make sure I didn't loose my ability to get down with something that didn't involve an airbrush.
In order to do this, I got rid of most of the tools I regularly use in my work. So, I stayed away from the airbrush, lasso tool, blur tool, smudge, etc. I ditched color and the use of lots of layers as well, this was done in gray tones on only 3 layers (a lot less than my norm). I also tried to keep my brush strokes very loose, as I usually tend to be really anal about keeping everything super clean.

So basically, I did everything different than I usually do, in order to broaden my range of styles.

I definitely like your use of hatching . . . but cut it out with the flash photography already!

I like the energy of this. Very loose and confident. I know you spend a lot of time on your photorealistic stuff (which turns out great), but I actually prefer this style... it has more character and texture. Plus, it looks like you had lots of fun painting it.

Nice to see a different style from you, very loose. I especially like the different layers of light and dark, it works well.

balistic~ Hey, thanks for the kind words sir. I knew you'd be digging the brush work on this one.

As far as reference goes.. Yea, the ref pic was taken during a New Year's Eve party a couple of years ago. The lighting in the room was all over the place.

I do say, this is a true step in the right direction.

hm. How long did it take you? It sure has many nice touches.

The only thing that pops out at me is her eyes... I cannot specifically put a name on the problem. They just seem out of place, as if they were not done in the same picture. I would recommend adding more of that interesting textural shading to some of the eye, and the eye-lashes just seem much too overpowering in a picture centered around the wiring. They are pure black while the rest of the face is texturally black, gray, and white. Try to work on pulling in your consistant texture so that the picture is seen as one, not many. Let the picture give its own impact.

I think what's grabbing your attention is how dark her eyelashes are. I wanted to make her eyes stand out by making her lashes real dark, but maybe I over did it a little.

At this small size a lot of the brush work is obscured.
Here's a full res cut-out of one of her eyes.

Still you may have a point, I'll work on that in the future.
