Yes, I'm totally annoyed, looking at it, so I would say you did a pretty good job!
You're missing one of them [img]-tags there! |

Have to agree - annoys the heck out of me - good job, haha.
The image might need some more contrast - meaning - deepen the the low-end of the values a bit. But you just might have wanted it that way (or your monitor setting is too dark ) |

Hehe very funny Well done too.
I agree with Sumaleth's point; you especially need darker values in the dark space behind his face (right now its solid grey, maybe RGB 50 or so.) And the reason the face looks off is the massive height of the forehead (or the misplacement of the facial features, depending on how you look at things.)
Great work; just try adjusting the contrast (and the colors, to compensate) and lopping off the top of his head. I think you'll see an improvement. |

Look at his upper half of the face, he looks like a cartoon version of Bruce Lee! |

Well done! However, I think his forehead might be a bit too long. Maybe that is what is making you uncomfortable with it?
I took the liberty of squashing his forehead a bit, and lengthening his jaw somewhat. I also fiddled with the values to make it "pop" more. Better you think?
Edit: added image.

What a wonderful job you've done! Wow! And yes, the "enhanced" version seemed to pinpoint the problems (minor as they were). |

Very good study... But... Doesn't Jim Carrey has a much more elongated(longer?) face than that?
I picture him very thin, while the picture has him a more, well.... square?
Just a thought... But I must admit that it's a long time since I've really taken a closer look at Jim Carrey. |

thanks roundeye, I'm glad I didn't change it for the worse.
The study itself is incredible, so it was pretty easy to tweak. Dumb and Dumber was my favorite movie for the longest time, so I have a special affinity with this piece. |

scylla, Swany is from Australia as well.
His image of Jim Carrey is from Dumb and Dumber, and Swani's quote "G'day mate, Throw another shrimp on the barbie..." is what Jim Carrey actually says when he sticks his head out the window.
It wasn't a cliche, it was a direct quote. |

really great! this was one of my favorite moments from that movie. there's just something about jim carrey's goofy face popping out of that window.
i think you should consider making some of the adjustments pixelsoldier talked about. it's a really helpful paintover. anyway, nice job! |

Wow, thanks for all the feedback guys n' gals! The contrasts may look weak but the actual DVD frame had alot less contrast....but this is for my portfolio and i like the look of Pixelsoldier's values better.
Pixelsoldier: Thank you! I'm going to adjust it as your nice paint-over indicates. It makes his face look less 'skrunched-up'...compared to your paint-over the original looks like a cone-head.
How did you warp/adjust my pic? (What tool did you use?)
I just realized part of the problem is the fact i was looking down at the TV a bit... A D&D moment... :P
I think D&D is Jim's best work...he needs to quit with the drama and utilize his gifts!

Here's the adjusted version. I followed PixelSoldier version almost exactly as his suggestions were spot-on. With the magic of the transform tool i was able to correct the distortion I got from looking down at the tv image:
I'm planning to do a few more 'sketchier' studies from the movie.
Thank you all again for taking the time to critique it! |

Hey man, no prob at all. You did a fantastic job separating the different planes (and in this case, creases) with your values. I just pumped them up a bit. If you're painting from a still off a DVD, then you aren't going to get entirely realistic values. I know that you've probably been taught to paint what you see and not what you THINK you see, but there are exceptions. Sometimes you need to compensate for technologies shortcomings with your own artistic instinct.
Anyway, I'm in love with your work. I can't wait to see more of your stuff!
And I totally agree with you in that Jim Carrey should go back to doing physical comedy. Dramatic roles are NOT what he should be taking. |
