New to the forums here, done a lot of stuff in photoshop previously, although not too much drawing and painting, since i am forced to use a mouse
Specs, done in Photoshop, took a couple of hours, started it from scratch, halfway through got hold of a picture to use as a reference and it's a semi-self-portrait. There are issues with proportions i know and i dont intend to work on it, but comments and criticisms are valued so i can apply them to my future work, thanks in advance.

Not bad Especially since you only had a mouse. I like the textured, mottled look for the most part, but although it works well on the background, it almost feels too muddy on the face. Maybe smooth the skin tones a bit, and sharpen up some of the lines (many of the edges are blurry and hazy). I like your choice of colors, but the orange of the hair feels a little too bright; maybe desature and tone it down a little to make it fit more with the overall gloomy color scheme? The structure of the face isn't bad, but doing several maore face studies (either on the computer or with pencil or charcoal) would be very helpful, to help you get a better sense of the shape and proportions of a head (it sure helped me a lot ^_^). The only major error I see is the line of the jaw and the ear. The jawline shouldn't curve in towards the face so sharply, and the ear should not be directly on the back of the head... Move the rightmost part of the jawline down a little, and flesh out the back of the head and neck (the skull extends for several more inches beyond the ear).
Aside from that, this is a nice portrait. ^_^ Good job on the nose, the detail around the eyes, and the actual shading on the ear.
Keep up the good work!

That has to be one of the best criticisms of my work ever, thank you so much! I totally see what you mean about the ear and jaw.. i think the whole top of my head is actually bigger than ive drawn it.. i was actually going for the matted look, but you are quite right, it has come off as kind of dirty..
I'll definitely put more effort into the next one i try.. thanks again for the detailed analogy! ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |
