Sorry, this isn't digital (I don't really have the greatest equipment to do digital art), but it's colored and everthing so I thought I'd see what people thought of it. I need crits on coloring methods/tonality, etc. Thanks!

You're right about me being more experienced with b/w than colors; i barely ever color my drawings. something about b/w just seems more attractive to me, unless it's really colored well, which i cannot do (yet).
i haven't had the best experiences with colored pencils so far. either i'm not versed enough with them to do it right, or they're just inherently less interesting (not entirely true, i've seen some nice-looking colored pencil pics). anyone have any tips on how to best use them?
Thanks, Basse_Ex! |

You've got some good stuff going for you, but also some flaws here and there...
First... What's up with that one shard of glass that makes the the black-haired girls hair go away??? Is it magic glass???
Then, to the coloring. Colored pencil(I'm assuming that's what you've used), is not an easy way to color, especially if you want it somewhat comic-book style. I think Serpieri(An italian comic-book artist) uses color-pencils or a similar looking style, and Bill Plympton(The guy who did all those crazy and wonderfully surrealistic hand-drawn animations for MTV back in ca.93-95) has colored some of his few comic-book works with that technique, and both artists makes it looks excellent, but these two are the only ones I know of that has pulled it off.
Your color tones are a bit dark, and boring. Especially the green sweater doesn't come off well. The other sweater is also a bit waek. The skin tones are... well... OK... and you've got some really nice shading here and there.
Your line work is much better, and both your grasp of anatomy and manga-charicature seems quite well. You can certainly improve much here also, but you seem much more mature as an black and white artist than you colors.
Well... all in all, a pretty nice picture, but change your coloring technique unless you want to struggle with it for ages.
Good luck. |
