Well, I bought Morrowind, been playing it a while it's pretty fun even though it runs like crap...I blame it all on direct3d. What really pisses me off is that I have a 1400mhz CPU and a brand spanking new geforce 4 and it only runs well enough just to play with the visibility distance turned down super low and the shadows turned off...
Just when you think you have a stable/powerfull system for gaming and stuff, either a new fun resource-hog game is released or f*cking nvidia releases a new graphics card every six months rendering your old one completly useless...maybe I should just stop being so obsessed with computer games...
has anyone else been able to run it allright? Any performance tips? |

I havent got it yet, Amazon needs to ship it yet. I hope I get it this week though.
But it wont really run on my pc anyways I think - oh well time for a new one. But I wanna wait for the new next-gen Matrox Card that is to be announced soon I hope.
I hope the game is really as fuckin great as everybody says |

What GeForce4 card do you have bro?
Edit: if it's an MX series card, I can understand your frustration. :P

Actually, I read somewhere that GeForce4 MX cards are the same as the GeForce3 card.
That shouldn't be tooo bad of a problem, its probably a ram or directx prob. |

GF4 MX != GF3
Geforce 4 MX has a way to accelerate vertex shader a bit by its drivers, but it does have NO pixel shader support!
MX = crap imho.
One question though:
Does Morrowind (or DirectX) do pixel shaders in software when you dont have a hardware device that can do em? If yes it would explain if there is a huge slowdown, but I dont really think thats the fault. |

MX isnt crap, it's just a cut down version to sell it for cheaper than regular and Ultra. |

I spent the money on a geforce4 ti4600...it's a kick ass card for the money you have to pay. It's insane because switching to really high resolutions doesn't even effect the framerate, If I run a game at 50fps in 640x480 it'll run the same in 1600x1200 or above! The refresh rates in those higher resolutions really ugly though, so I don't really go above 1600x1200...
Yeah, Those MX cards SUCK! if anyone is thinking of buying an MX...DON'T! I actually had an MX for a week untill I sold it. I was hoping to replace my geforce 2 gts with an MX420. The geforceMX420 was slower than my old card! The fullscreen anti-aliasing was faster...but who cares about that if you can't run it higher than 640x480 due to it being crappy...
I think my problem with morrowind is my CPU...my graphics card is spitting out all these pretty graphics at high resolutions on the screen with ease as my CPU is struggling to keep up with all the AI and calculations going on in the background and starts to get bogged down...oh well...maybe I just need a new hobby or maybe even *gasp* a life! |

Heheh, seems as though everyone is against you in this, Shizo.
Nilwort, yea, it surely isn't your video card. That's a slick card. How much RAM do you have, and what type? Intel or AMD processor? I just have a hard time believing that a 1400mhz CPU has THAT much trouble with Morrowind. I'm only running an Athlon XP 1800+ and the game runs flawlessly. :/ |

Man...that game was fun as hell to work on. So much design and hard work was put into it. I don't think I've ever seen a more detailed game.
Damn it was cold up in Maryland though. I had my own office with a gigantic window at one point while working at Bethesda and man...I remember having a hood, trench coat, and gloves on in that office while working on that damn game. I don't remember if the heater was broken or what. I just remember seeing my breath and hallucinating about a woman named "Rose" the whole time.... :P

pixelsoldier: I've got 2 256 meg DDR sticks of Crucial RAM and an AMD processor on an ABIT KG7 motherboard...the game runs ok...it's just I can't crank the visibility distance up that far without it slowing down to around 20 fps, especially in the populated towns and stuff...
Here's some screens of my morrowind adventure so far (about a 500k download if you can handle it)...
Some of the armor looks really cool in the game...
Sandstorms are bad...
High poly thorny plant-type things in sandstorm!!!
The interior of some of the buildings look really welll designed..
Some of my loot that I keep in this guy's house cause it's too heavy to carry around, for some reason I've been collecting candles and little demonic statues....
Some scrolls and some weapons...

DAMN, I dont want to wait any longer, but that damn amazon didnt ship the game yet
Morrowind is a game I really wouldve loved to work on. I think the devs can really be proud of it. |
