Hello all, this is only the 2nd time i post, you dont remember me.. heh.
Anyway, here's a recent image, for commenting on or just for your viewing pleasure!
Things here seem to be geared towards the realistic look, but I hope my style can still find a home here ^_^

I love it the linework, the composition, the textures... reminds me a bit of Akira, but maybe it's just the red rope + anime style... nice work, hope to see more here soon...

Great image and style. I also took a look at youe site, great work. But the fact that you're 18 years old really blows my mind. How did you get into the comics industry so early? How long have you been freelancing? Did you go to art school at all or are you completly self tought? Are you currently in a university? Don't get me wrong I belive that you're 18 but I am amazed that you've achived so much professionaly so early.

Heheh yep, I'm "Just a kid" as they say... Turning 19 soon though

At 17 I kind of got sucked into the industry through a friend, first just helping him out a bit, and the next think I know I'm working indipendently with the big boys of the industry, and everyone wants a piece of me

All the demand added to personnal stresses in my life caused me to drop out of highschool only months away from graduation, I couldn't handle both my job and school... I chose work because well, I don't get paid for going to school, and work is more stimulating... I have no official training, I'm self taught. I plan to go to college someday, but that's looking less and less likely every day, sadly.

Wow, it's great to see pros coming in, especially Canadian ones! I already have Transformers signed up for my subscription box at my local comic store, because I love all Dreamwave comics

Warlands is effing awesome, plus I'm always willing to support Canadian start-ups

Too bad you didn't get a chance for college, though. Definitely something you should think about later on. Getting in on the ground floor of Dreamwave, though... that's incredible. Can't wait to see more of your work

That is a beautiful image indeed.
A butterfly, a sword and a swordsman are so beautiful togeather because of their symbolic values.

I really like the designs of the crystal(?) sword/helmet

Yeah, the sword is some kinda crystal or glassy stuff. Glad you like the design! Only problem ws, since the blade is crystal as well as the sheath for it, you can't define the two. So it looks like he's holding some kind of crooked bat

I'm curious, what kind of "symbolic values" do you see behind this? I'm interested to know what this image says to you.

Firstly i think of the butterlfy which, to me, represents the briefness of life, grace, and "living for the moment" seeing that some butterflies only have a day to live in that form before they die. Butterflies have a fragile and soft aspect, which oppose the sword symbolically (in my view).

The sword, carried by the warrior, (I'll get to him next) is the violent counterpart to the butterfly. Although graceful in form, slender and thin, it is - unlike the butterfly - rigid, sharp and dangerous. It symbolizes (IMO) brutality, violence and death because even though it is a beautifully crafted object it was made to take life in the most gruesome manner.

The warrior is the interesting element that brings togeather both of the prevously stated in a sort of harmonious way. The warrior is graceful in movement, however, each beautifully executed movement leaves a butchering result on his opponents. As a person i imagine he has to be "soft" and caring because he fights for a cause (protecting his land, family and loved ones) but he is also cruel enough to kill others that oppose him (even if they fight for the same personal causes as he does).

The warrior's life is similar to the butterfly's. He lives for the moment, because the chances that he will have a short life (like the butterfly) is great.

I like the fact that you gave him a red cape, similar to the butterlfy's wings, and a helmet with the same material as the sword. I feel this binds him to both.

Lastly, I think of the butterfly as a "memento mori" or "reminder of death", giving justice to his melancholic expression instead of a joyful one upon seeing it.

I am aware that this may well be far from your intentions but since you showed interest i thought i'd share.

Wow.... I don't think I've ever had such meaning expressed from my art. That's truly excellent that it speaks to you that way. Makes me proud of my work

I don't mind other people finding totally different meaning in my art. In fact i prefer that. As long as it speaks to the viewer in any way, I'm happy.

Guess I'll say what I had in mind when I drew it too just in case anyone's wondering.
Well simply put, The butterfly is love, or more specifically, a girl that was a big and great part of my life. The warrior is me i suppose, though I don't see myself as tough or anything. This is more of a traveler, which i tried to show with the wide open hills and sky kind of BG. And his battle is life, the journey itself. Made the sword clear to give it a less cold and threatening look, since it's not for killing people, but battling life's problems.
The word on the cape is the chinese word for pain, or so tells me the computer translator I used...
So to stick it all together, The traveling warrior is covered with pain (represented by the cape) from his many difficult battles in life so far. On one sunny peaceful day the wind brings to him a butterfly, which lands on his hand, and lifts away the pain. This image is the moment in which he finally finds relief from having to be a strong restless warrior, and can just be alive.
Basically it's a breif moment of happiness in a long and painful journey. That's what she was to me, and now that she's gone, the cape feels heavier than ever. But I'm still forever grateful to have known a moment's peace.
