Well, I painted this to see how long it could take to create something a bit "detailed"...and it took too long (I won't talk about the three crashes Painter did when I had nearly finished it, that made me re-create the whole gun and some other things). I think it must have taken around 40 hours, so now the question is...
...from a "pro" point of view (i.e. a freelancer that earns his/her living from out works) are 40 hours too many to complete a job? Is this level of detail required? (well, those are two questions).

And as usual, comments and *specially* critics are welcome.

Well, I'm no pro, but I think that you spending 40 hours on this definetely shows. The artwork is amazing, the colours are perfect. In my opinion, I don't think that 40 hours is too much. If a magazine or something wanted a cover and they gave you a week to get it done, then you would make the cut. Plus, I'm sure that once you keep using the program, you will learn a lot of shortcuts that you can take to shorten the time taken.
Overall, BRAVO!!! Me likes.....

I also like this piece a lot, but I have a few critiques:

1) The cloth looks too much like satin for a thick, rough, tough GI uniform. Try making the edges harder.

2) The material of the helmet is hard to decipher. A diffuse, black substance with white highlights...?

3) The hand anatomy may be a little off. Remember--knuckles are in an arc, not a line (but this is a tiny problem and maybe I'm exaggerating it.)

4) Perspective of the shadow looks off, but the background is very loose so *shrug* it's probably ok.

Otherwise very nice work. I really like the face, and most of the rendering is top notch work.

If you break it down practically, this means the employer has to pay you (at a rate of 25-30 USD/hour) like 1150 USD for an image like this. Nobody does that. The image is good though, I'm not saying it's bad, but nobody would pay that amount of money for it.

This is great! Good lighting and all. Only thing that strikes me is the wrinkles in this outfit are a lottle on the fuzzy side, making it look like fleece or some other furry material. Maybe a little bit of a harder brush to make the folds more rigid? Or also perhaps throw over some kind of canvas or burlap texture to break up the solid colour?... And also I think the body area lacks a bit of shadow intensity. Other thank that, cool cool cool

Other than the stuff other people pointed out, the pinky on his right hand shouldn't be showing that much, I don't think. And it looks a little broken. I love the sort of washed-out 50's-magazine style that it has though. Nice

Yeah i like the picture, but i would say henrik is right in that 40 hours is just to long. You should prolly work on ways to speed up your process, theres gotta be some way to speed it up with out totally destroying the quality.

painter crashes for you to eh....i had a painting done one time on painter and it crashed...i h8 that program sometimes...meh likes your painting

One other thing that I've noticed that no one else pointed out is that the barrel looks to be a little bent.

Mb Thanks for your critics:
1) Yes, the original idea was to add some textures in a layer at the top, but I got tired of the pic before adding it. And you are right, the wrinkles may seem soft.
2) The hi-res pic shows better the helmet texture (this one has it), but you know: reduction+compression JPG is a bad detailer.
3) I always forget that about knuckles! You are completely right! Thanks a lot for the reminder!
4) Yep, I am not too good with backgrounds

henrik : Well, I didn't know how much an hour of work would be, thanks for the info. Plus, you cleared my doubt: it is really too much time Well, if I ever get into the business (I doubt it, watching the level of the the pros) I'll have to speed my painting process. Thanks for the info!

Beowulfthefallen It is quite funny that in other forums there is an open discussion about if the hands are right or not. Some people do not see any problem in them, while others talk about the knuckles and the pinkies...It is quite interesting, but shows there is something wrong with them

HoodZ There was a moment I didn't know if I was going to hit the screen with my fist! But Painter is similar to my wife: some few times she drives me mad, but I love her/it so much that I can forgive those little moments easily!

Darkliege I don't have that impression, but it can easily be true as I didn't create a whole straight line as a guidance for the whole gun, but three ones. The last one may have got out of perspective. I'll check it! thanks for the comment!
