This is my favorite pic you have done yet. I like the looseness and structural quality of the ship in the bg. The lighting gives spacial sense to the overall picture. Good job...can I say it reminds me of Miyazaki's water color sketches? In a good way......
At work we've watching alot of Japanese anime for reference and I can appreciate this type of work.

PS. How's Stevo?

hehe looks cool looks cool.. Just a question if you dont mind..
What was the point of using gouach as water colour when you could have use water colour ( cheaper hehe ) just as easily or MORE easily.. GOuache is usaully ment for opaque application .. its really good at that.. but if you can mix the opaque with washes thats even better =)...
I never really understoon why people used gouache as water colour ? They didnt have watercolour on hand so they used gouache ( makes sense hehe) Oh is there more colours to pic from in gouache.. i dont know.. anyways stupid ramblings.. Looks good man i like only crit.. characters could be more defined.. harf to she his shapes and forms.. and looks pretty blured |

It seems a little too loose, it's hard to tell what's going on. You do have a nice flair to your line though. Keep it up! |

Would like to see what comes out in the end, as the composition works quite well and your finished pieces are great ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Well, using Gouache as you would watercolors isn't a mistake in itself, but the mess you can make of your canvas is. So, if you don't have a 'gesso' matted canvas, your paper can end up all wrinklish, or the paper would rip when you apply a stroke over another one because of the water.
Other than that, very interesting effect, and nice concept overall. I really like the texture on the left mountain. Although, I'd say the sort of 'emptyness' of opaque color on the character, and the opaqueness of the left-mountain doesn't make a nice mix, I think. |

Magic pen - uh, some bad figure drawing, most likely...
I.C. - hey you changed your nick! What, did you change video cards, haha. Thanks for the comment - yeah, that sort of stuff is a huge influence on me too. Stevo is great - still kicking my ass and making me earn my pay.
wigin - I guess I meant to say I used it as a transparent medium rather than as a thick opaque, out-of-the-tube type medium. I actually have this small set of gouache pans in a box. I agree about the blurring and lack of definition. I will see what I can do about that.
watchitman - thanks, I will try.
Fritz - thank you, the comments are encouraging me to maybe finish this up in photoshop.
Dark Goblinking - good observations, I agree about the weird blending of opaque and transparent. That's something I never ran into with similar pieces done in watercolor. The staining/opacity of gouache colors seem slightly different from their watercolor counterparts. I used a watercolor block, which kind of allows me to shortcut the paper stretching step, which was always a hassle. |
