THis is almost finished. FOr the most part it is done. I would say there is about 3 hours left in this one, but for the most part it is finished...
This is a study of the Archdeacon by Ilya Repin, a 19th century painter from Russia. In fact, he is concidered one of the best Russia has ever produced. He is hailed as Russias Sargent. I have been doing studies from him for several weeks now, as I am looking for a voice, or a caligraphy, a way of putting paint on thecanvas and making it look good. THe best place for artists, or budding artists to start is by copying someone we really admire.
I really like Repins work, some things about it more than others, like his brushmanship, I really like it. It is like a slightly loose version of Norman Rockwell, with lots of little tiles painted everywhere to describe the form. Anyway, I am moving onto Rockwell, then Sargent. THis is the last of my Repin copies. It is 30 inches by 40 inches, just a few inches short of the original. I am copying one to one to understand the brush craft, not so much the drawing of the image.
Sorry for the bad images, they are all digital 1 chip ccd with a bad lighting condition. I get done with each of my sessions with this painting by 2 or 3 in the morning. SO the lighting has never really been good for me to shoot this well. I have to wait till this weekend and I will post a better image of the final painting.
Comments are fine, but since this was a 25 hour task, I am probably not going to change anything major. Just details...
The colors I cant say will get accurate comments till you guys can see the real colors and not these washed out colors.
Thanks for the comments, looking forward to what yall have to say.
oh yea, the las couple images are a few from our studio, this is where I and Erik Gist work. I forget Eriks handle now, but you can see his stuff if you go to my website and go to the links section. He has one there.

Frankly, I don't think I'm qualified to try to find something to critique in this. I'll just say it looks good :] |

Very awsome, i forgot to say something to you last time.
Remmeber the last time you posted a bunch of 3-5 min sketches? Well, i compared your drawing to Joseph Sheppard's drawing in the book "Anatomy - A complete guide for artists" and yours is so much damn better! WOW!!
This mean that, YOU HAVE TO MAKE A BOOK!!! You are more than good enough already!!!
Btw, are you gonna visit this forum regulary like in the "old days"? Cause i've got a pic soon to be posted and needs your advice, it meant alot to me cause i've spent more than 10 hours on it already ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I'd like to see a closer view, a detailed section that shows the brushwork if you get the chance. Kinda hard to tell from this distance...or size I mean.
And since I have no tradition painting skills I'm going to ask a really stupid question about the palette: How do you go about figuring out what palette an artist might have used? Do you do color studies before you begin or is it just through the raw power of experience that you can figure it out before you start (or perhaps as you are painting).
edit: If only I'd work on my spelling as much as I've been working on my art...

Wow.. it seems to me what we are quite lucky to have fine artists of your talent to share beautiful stuff like this with us. Thanks very much for sharing it, I wouldn't dare critique it. In my eyes, it seems near perfection.
I've lurked here for years, so forgive me if I have my names mixed up, but I seem to remember you getting married a few years back to a really beautiful young lady. Are you guys still together? If so, that's awesome. If not, I'm sorry to have mentioned it. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I can't visit your website. I get a 404 Not Found thingy.
I don't even want to comment on pictures because there is really nothing I can say (other than blatant sucking up)and I feel so out of place even posting a reply ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Beautiful, simply beautiful !
The pictures of your studio made me think of a small favor i'd like to ask (i think other would be interested as well) ...
i would love to see i small photo of your brushes ... how do you get such fine details (the face) while working on a rather small canvas space (for the head) ... i'd love to see a picture of your tools of trade
Thanks a lot and again ... Beautiful work ! |

fred: have you ever considered using the oil paint that doesn't dry until you take a hair dryer or something to it? or is that option too expensive for a painting at this scale and the amount of images you plan on doing? |

It looks like his pinky finger is too long, else his pointer finger is too short, as well as the middle finger.
The first and third finger are usually almost the same length, and unless there is some perspective stuff I'm not picking up on in that little image, it would seem that they are not. In fact it looks like the ring finger is longer than the middle finger, which is just wrong. |

Hey, Frederick.
Just wanted to drop in and say hi. Nice work. Looking at this and your other recent thread, it's clear that your skill is growing geometrically. Damn this stuff is nice.
Also, it looks like we Mosers are moving to your neck of the woods in May (actually, L.A.). We'll have to hook up. |

I agree with at least one other person who mentioned:
MAKE A BOOK.
I'd buy it. You say you work 2 jobs, then work on your art for a few hours starting at 10.30 at night . . . that leaves at least 5 hours where you could be making the book and neglecting that overrated thing we call sleep

hey, these look reeaaally nice.
I was browsing through your site, and I must say, you're pretty dang good!
I wanted to ask you, what technique do you use when you shade (in pencil or charcoal, whichever)? I do a lot of hatching/crosshatching. Do you do the same? I can't tell unless I'm up close... but your skin tones seem to be really smooth. I'm guessing you might use a tortillian, maybe some toilet paper (i used to do that lol)?
Your anatomy is also really good. How often do you study it? I hope to be a master at anatomy some day
The painting looks really good. I like it mucho grande. I never heard of the guy (I've never heard much of eastern artists, except Amano), but he seems to be pretty good.
Also, your studio looks really... tidy. lol.
