Hello,
I'm curious to get anyone's opinion about a picture I drew to get a grasp on different styles. There's something that's not quite right about it, I just can't put my finger on it.
This is my first attempt at realism with any sort of guideance (bought an anatomy book last night). The subject of choice was myself, just to have a good reference.
If you could tell me anything that you notice is wrong, right or whatever, please do.
Thanks,
-Linguar |

I'll be the first to give you my honest opinion. I'm not trying to be harsh.. but it is nowhere near realism at all.
Of course I am not exactly sure what you mean by realism...
maybe you mean photorealistic.. if so, then you are nowhere near it. (Honestly)
If you mean realism, in terms of it looking like you, then it may be ok... You may have meant to draw a cartoon like image, that is easily identifable as you.. thus realism.
I'm not sure which one you were going for though, so before I can make any suggestions I'd love to know what you were intending? |

Hello Ian,
I meant by no means photo-realism
I don't have the color palette or programs for that... -- nor the knowledge for what that would involve...
I was intending for a style other then anime, which is my primary and desired medium for drawing. But yes, cartoonish is my ideal goal... however the image originally looked more realistic before I colored it, It lost most of that in the clean up process, because I am very much a newbie at it (and drawing for that matter).
Thanks for your reply though,
-Linguar

i tried an overpaint to explain my points, i think there are some anatomy problems. think the head must be a bit smaller then it looks more correct, or realistic, and i would chance something with the nose. doesn't really look good. i think a bit like this would be better.

keep on |

ahh.. ok. Yeah I thought so, just had to make sure, becuase I didnt want to bash you with criticism for no reason.
You used MSpaint!?
I certainly agree with pro-phet's suggestions, the head size in relation to the features is the biggest mistake you made.
Notice that in pro-phet's fix up, the ears are roughly in line with the top of the nose, and the bottom. This is a common feature of most people. It helps to determine ear size and positioning. I don't know many other tips that I can offer you, but as a rule of thumb... "people don't have three eyes"
keep on drawing! |

Hey pro-phet,
Thanks for the help ^_^;; -- that overpaint makes a lot of sense, I knew there was something wrong, but I just didn't know what ;P
Thanks,

Now i don't claim my overpaint to be realistic. It's bascially a linedrawing with more attention to small subtle details
in the shapes. Hope it can help you some.
Also adding more variation and thickness in the lines can add more depth to the picture.
If you do a line drawing like you did you must be careful wich lines that you decide to draw. Think of a photograph and that you take away the details that are not important to describe the shapes(and likeness for that matter)
Good luck!
