hey... i'm just making an old map for a background to my site. i think i'm gonna add that old paper texture, so it makes it look even older. I'm still waiting for the paper to soak up all the tea and all that stuff, so i figured i'd just get everything else done, and see how it looks... i might just end up keeping it like this? eh, we'll see.

it doesn't look as good as the psd... i don't know why, but there's only a few colors and yet the jpeg compression at 4 it's still 60 K. it's not a very big pic either! that's messed up.

It looks prety cool, but i think maybe it could use somemore texture on the land. or maybe just add an old paper texture.
a picture like this, you might try 8 or 16 color gif compression, because ther is just black and brown, with large spaces of brown.

glad you like it ..
also displacement maps quick run through on how this one was done.

First take the image that you want the other image to displace to. EX the paper

I wanted your map to displace to the paper that i scaned. So what I did was take the paper and convert to gray scale and bump up the contrast and saved it as a PSD. (needs to be psd or it wont work)

Next goto the layer that has the image you want to displace and goto filter > distort > Displace now it will ask the percentage you want to displace (play with this number) for this image i think i used 2 then it will ask for the image to displace find the psd you saved

click ok and your image will displace to it, then just add a layer with the paper and make it multiply , knock down the trans on it to like 80 or 85 an it should look good .. hmm hope that made sense

You could try painting some textures with custom brushes on a seperate layer and playing with the layer opacity settings and the curves settings.

Here's a result of doing just that.
