Hi, this is the third digital painting I've finnished and the first one done in photoshop. Sorry if it's a long load, I decided to use a big canvas, please tell me if it should be reduced in size. I used a reference photo, though I think I should try doing a painting without one next time, since it's sorta just a crutch. What are your guys' thoughts?
Reference Photo
Damn, Liquid2k is down, here are the geocities links, drag them into your adress bar:

Nice colors and proportions. The eyelid on the eye to our right is bit wonky, but overall, nice job.
Question: Why do you consider using a photo ref a "crutch?" Wouldn't it be like any other artists' tool (ruler, circle template, eraser shield, etc.) which is used to make a piece more accurate?
This image is an interpretation of the ref and IMO, your treatment is an improvement over the look of the original.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your comments, I just feel that an artists job isn't simply to replicate things they see, but to create something new. I guess what I ment was that I would like to use a reference photo for only a reference next time, and not to try to reproduce the picture. Maybe just use the photo for the pose or the lighting. Thanks again for your thoughts! |

mish235, I second the eye thing. Her let eye looks like it's open a little more or something. The lips are great though. I wish I could get lips that looked that nice.
