That just looks amazing! The paladin's face has been painted beautifully and the rough brsuh-stroked style really works.

I think the lack of contrast should be left the way it is, though (sorry, Flex! ). It's got a Renaissance oil painting feel to it as it is.

Thanks everyone. This painting went much smoother than my previous attempts at painting w/photoshop. I've got a lot more planned.

Flexible elf, I'll keep the contrast thing in mind. I've still got so much to learn about color and value.

Your painting skill is fantastic.
I’d say to put a slight shadow under or to the side of his hair so that it doesn’t look like it is pressed completely to his forehead. And I’m not certain if the composition would benefit it, but you could try putting some of the same reflected light from the left nostril on the upper lip.
Like I said at the beginning, really well done and solidly depicted.

REALLY nice job on the face. He looks like someone who actually exists, not another generic fantasy hero.

Hi there. I trie e-mailing you but the addres on this site does not work. Just visited your web site. I noticed that your paladin painting and the one with the horse and the rider stronlgy remind me of Craig Mullin's paintings on his web site. You should be careful when job hunting. Don't use his ideas - they might know his work (after all, he is one of the very best). If you can't help it, you better give credit where credit is due.

Just wanted to give you some advice, hope you appreciate it and don't feel offended

Benji

Actually, I originally posted that knight on horseback painting here, and Craig did an overpaint of it.

I saw this when you first put it here, but didn't get a chance to comment. I think your painting style has really improved incredibly. This is excellent, the only areas I can see to crit are the tints around the eyes look a little unusual. A bit strong maybe, blending them out a touch might help, also the hair looks a bit flat, needs a little tint there. All in all great work.

I like it! nice choice of palette. Think your painting has really come a long way from you earlier work. Tho why the white patches around the eyes? been lying in the sun with his shades too long??

Argh! Those highlights! That's pretty funny, Cos. Boomstick pointed that out too. I'll fix it someday. I must've been staring at it too long and didn't notice it or something.

This is a very nice painting. I've got lots of praises but I think you've heard everything by now. Now here's what I think can be improved on (though of course I'm no expert)

1. Starting with the head:
I like the positioning of the hair. It is very lifelike. However, it looks a little flat and lifeless. Try adding in more tones to create texture.

The facial tones in the face could use some more blue hues. I see them lightly coming off the forehead however, the picture will be more realistic if you add them in the shadow areas. I'd suggest a cereleum blue. The model of the face is wonderful. The facial structure really shows the skull beneathe. Good job! But I agree with your last post about the white highlights on the brow. It could be tamed a little. The white around the eye is great! Nice shadowing!

The beard could use some highlights as well. Also, the hair growth would realistically be alot more wiry than standing straight out or/and it might curve into the neck. The volume of the beard definitely changes as it is pushed into the armour. NICE rendering and colouring on the lips.

2. The drapery on the red cloth is great. I like how it reflects on the top part of the armour. You can still add more subtle tones to the red folding in the front. It looks a little stiff and 2d. I really like the colours you chose. IT's a very beautiful shade that works well with your colour palette.

The only question I have is with the pattern on the front part of the shirt. Is that an embroidery? Is that a shirt or is that armour? I think this should be addressed. Finally, what kind of cloth is draped over the subject? Is it velvet? cotton? linen? I'd like to see some nuances here.

You've done a great job with the sword. You do iron/metal pieces very well. Metal picks up reflections not only from the colours in surrounding it, but it also picks up strange variations from the light sources behind the figure. I like how your lighting is light on the left of the figure and gradually goes darker.

Nice work! I was picky but that's because I think you picture is worth my effort - in whatever way you may receive it.

A humble critique.
yours, traveller

My bro did a quicky paintover on those eye highlights and abit more overall shadow on the body armour, think it's an improvement. He didn't get round to posting it tho I got it here so I'll just put it up anyway, hope it's useful.

Hey, this is great! Just when I thought this post was dead, I get more helpful critiques.

Traveller, those are some good points. I basically painted this from my head, and did it pretty quickly on top of that, so I missed a lot of those details. Now I'll have some things to think about when I go back to it.

Cos, thanks for the paintover. The shadow on the armor is subtle but it makes a difference.
