Spend more time scribbling out shapes and ideas before diving in and trying a full-page piece. I’ve found it helpful if you reserve a sketchbook for only rough concepts. You simply must not attempt to make any finished drawings in it. This keeps the sketches flowing and avoids stagnation.
Grab an anatomy book- Constructive anatomy by Bridgman or dynamic anatomy by Hogarth (Amazon has them for cheap). Just don’t get too caught up in it because both of these fellows have horrifically blatant styles. Especially Hogarth. Also check out some animal anatomy books for other muscle concepts.
The most important aspect of creating drawings is to absolutely understand what the shapes are that you want to portray.
The most important aspect of conceptual design is to push every aspect of your work as far as it can go. Don’t get hung up on one thing over and over. Explore and see what works. |

That portrait is really promising. Your best piece of the whole. Keep at it and concentrating on defining shapes is a good advice.
Cheers,
