Hey Frank
Nice sketches. I am taking drawing this semester at an art college. I hear there are plenty of assignments where you have to sketch in that time frame. Did you use reference in these? |

IP: yep. the reference was propaganda posters from WWI from a book (varying countries including the US, france, england, germany, italy, etc. so you get the full scope of it.) I'm working on gettings things down with speed. I still need some work, but hey, I never said I was done. I'm just a wee high school student, so I figure I should do some college like exercises so I don't get culture shock next year. btw, I hear that alot of art programs do the same in their painting courses as they do in their drawing courses (one mini painting a day.) I'll try to do some more sketches out of the book and then maybe I'll start a new thread for "speed sketches" I'd like to see some of your work IP and see what everyone else can do with 10 mins or so, that way I have something to shoot for and I can get some tips.
Buenos Nachos

I haven't had much time to draw or paint lately. (still have a few pics on board waiting to be finished) I think I'll blame the blasted "Lord of the Rings" series. I'm reading through it again, and I'm forgetting to eat and blink and stuff. I did a few quick sketches of propaganda stuff during my art hour at school. I spent 10-20 mins on each.
Thanks for your time. C&C's are welcome.

hehe, well I am not too comfortable sketching all the time digitally. So for better sketching, it's going to mean getting back to my art desk and manually draw...hmmm, I think I can still do that
Actually, I need to get back to that anyways for school...

Ok, Frank, I managed to do a few quick sketches.
These took from 5 min to 20 min.
I have a rough time with this tablet when it comes to slow precision lines. Pen tip jitters quite a bit. Need to get an Intuos sooner or later, artpadz II isn't bad, but i need more control over the tip movement. I have the latest drivers too.
I was really tired doing these but forced myself to get this far.

wow. those are pretty nice. your guys are beefcakes, I'm jealous. are you wanting some suggestions? here they are, want them or not. heh. the rough sketches look really good (the head and the crawling body.) but the more developed ones of the men have a bad dependance of outlining things. bad bad. I tend to show seperation by drop shadows and stuff. (maybe they are drop shadows and my sickly eyes are disowning and fooling me.) also, you're having some trouble with connecting the head to your bodies with the neck. it looks really similar to the problem I have with jaw lines. they're just not right. I'll try to get some scans up for you to look at. I'm off to do a few sketches of my own. I'll try on the tablet.

Hey Frank
Yea, I didn't use any reference on any of these so what ends up coming out is my comic book style art which I drew for 20 years. Good thing I am taking figure class for the first time ever this semester so I can pull away from drawing from memory. I started out drawing my wife as a live model, but soon learned that I couldn't show my progress, because I would have to hurt somebody if they stared too long lol. As far as the neck head issue, well...quickies they are.

understood. heh. those are really good if you're doing it from memory. I couldn't do that. haven't really studied anatomy, just mostly heads and I'm still far from being good at that. :/ anyway, here's a quickie I did in about 10-15 mins. I'm doing a still life at school of skulls. I spent alot of time looking at it, and I think I got really close to what it looks like here at home from memory.
oh yeah, JD, how dare you intrude on the IP and Frank club thread! heh, just joking man, thanks for the opinions. my two favorites are of the boy (the first) and the horses. I'm still displeased with the faces though for the amount of time I spent on them.
keep drawin'
