Overlays in general can lead to good texture emulation or creation, but in your case, when you can actually see what pic you took for an overlay, is pushing it a little too far I think. Spooge would do the same kind of technique I'm sure, but rather on his pics he hides the overlay very well, in such a way that it melts in the picture.

yes true. I used a couple photos, spooges pic and a dew scrible and filters for the overlay. I love that gritty texture Uther has. Yes I need to be more sublte in the use of overlays.

Sorry Spooge if you aren't happy about this, I will change it tomorow.
texturemap used

Thanks

Freddio, the first picture looks interesting but has some things that I'd like to point out. The edges of the character look "pixely" like he was pasted onto the backgroind and not painted into it.

The face, body, clothes, etc. look very (too) smooth and have a very (too?) soft shading to them. This gives the impression of him being a 3d model rather than a 2d Painting.

His dreads are overly pointy if you ask me.

The second picture really seems to emphasise the "sunset" part of the picture for it looks as if the sun was setting itself right on top of his head. Flames, fire, woohoo!

The pose doesn't really give off much rythm...it looks more like he's a kareoke singer, waiting for the guitar solo to die out while staring at the screen where the lyrics appear.

It looks like he has a white glove on his microphone hand.

sorry for not giving any advice and just pointing out my unfounded dislikes. It's actually not a bad picture.

i'm not sure were you aiming for the realism, but the anatomy is way off. his left hand is like rubber, and his thumb bones stick out. the lighting on the face is much darker and saturated than on the rest of the body, especially the hand. certain parts look translucent. next, his left (our right) arm and leg are thicker. the pants don't wrinkle at all, neither does the shirt. his hair looks like a piece of cardboard glued to forehead. the background is inconsistent too. between his legs there's only yellow. *takes some air* the reflection on the floor is wrong too. that would be the bigger errors. there's also a bunch of smaller ones (that would be nitpicking).

having in mind your other pics, i was rather surprised (in the negative way) to see something like this...

you know Its a cartoon right?

I wasnt going for realism.
hence the plasticy feel and huge shoes.

btw MrT. what reflection?
yes it is different from my other stuff, I know there are all those errors and stuff but I like it how its I like the overall picture.

Anyway I think you were nit picking already just a bit " Its a bit pixelated around the edges"

Looks pretty good, trying new stuff is always good
Can't really add much else to what the others said as far as crits go. I guess my main crit would be the edges of your pic. Certain parts are really sharply done and this gives it a bit of a cutout feeling, and some parts are really blurry, like the face.
I don't really know how I'd approach it personally
Seriously though, Dhab's style is so hard to get a grasp of because it's cartoony and realistic at the same time?? It's so hard to figure out.
You gonna continue with this or stick with the paintbrush?
