I know its technically not digital art but I'd like some feedback on some of my photos. About to redo my photography page and I'm adding some new things. I say new, although some of these photos are old... my camera has been busted for months but this is the first time I've scanned these pictures in so they are new to everyone but me.

Are you developing these yourself or do you have someone else do them?
i'm going to say this for everyone's benifit, i think others can learn something here that will help them out, not just with photography but with over all composition and thinking before you even draw....

i would suggest concentraiting more on your subject. Right now, what you are showing is more of a "scientific" study than it is anything else.
i guess scientific is too strong of a word,i guess what i'm saying is, your photo's need more thought. Try not to center everything in the frame (viewfinder) work with your depth of field for various results. Try to arrange your subject with other objects, or in a way that would make you think twice when you look at it.
I've seen photographs of vegetables that at first glance, they appeared to be naked woman, these were totally untouched or manipulated, it was just the way the light hit the green peper and the angle of the shot...at first it looked just like a woman's lower back and butt, then i looked again and realised..hey, that's a damn green pepper!
here are some photographers i suggest you look at, maybe these will give you some new ideas and some inspiration
good luck and have fun.
one of many for MEATYARD
look for other sites on him, he had some really strange ideas, but they all worked great! read into the subject matter and look at the composition.
one of my favorite photographers of all time is David levinthal

i have some of his books, and they are amazing! He used one helluva a big camera, but with a macro lens you can achieve a similar effect. I took about 250-300 rolls of film one semester trying to emulate his style, i used the Spawn figures and various things instead of the older toys. in the end, i learned that it was the subject and not the effect that made his work.."Work".
look at the work he did for mein kampf and the things he did with the barbie dolls.

If anyone knows of the photographer who used the vegitables and fruit, as i mentioned above, please say so. i can't for the life of me remember his name.
more of levinthal's work

oops, one thing i forgot to mention about levinthal..as i said, he used a very large polaroid camera, so most of his prints were 24x20" So seeing these things at that scale, have a stronger effect.

Hey Jez, I like the photos! I'm not a fan of flower macro stuff, so I'm biased, but I love the scenery photos and the B/W photos.

I rarely see you shoot humans. Is there a reason why?

hey Lunatique, great photos on your site.
i really like the "Tina and helen" you have as a thumbnail.(about the 9th one down on your photopage) That's a great composition and the lighting is awesome too. Cool stuff.

jabber - Thanks

samdragon - I only developed two of these myself. The rest came from the wonderful Wal-Mart photo center

As for your suggestions on the style I've used... the "scientific": study is definitely more what I was going for here. If I want to take a picture of a flower, its because I think the flower is beautiful and I want to be able to show it to someone else and say, "Hey, check out this beautiful flower!" I don't have any desire to make it look like a naked woman or anything. *giggles*

That's great that you prefer that style and all... but I kinda like the straight-forward look as well. I'm still veeeery much an amateur photographer so these simple things are within my comfort zone right now.

Luna - Yeah... I don't take pictures of people very often because I don't have any models. And my camera is busted right now. Here is one photo I took though, of my best friends son:

Excuse the jpeg compression

wow, you really caught something in that photo of your friend's kid. i think that's one of the best photos shown on the thread.

i do like your flower pictures; i love the (feh, i can never remember if it's a high f-stop or a low f-stop that does this) blurred background with only the subject matter in focus.

one little thing that bugs me about your landscape photos, tho, is the horizon seems a tidge too close to the middle, or there's a little too much sky. think thirds.

quite lovely tho, all of them.

Yeah... I know sweetpea... I am so good at overlooking the thirds rule its scary! These are some of my first pictures though, I've learned more since then.

Hopefully if I get my camera repaired I can take some new ones that work a little better compositionally.

Glad you like the picture of Michael. My best friend loved it

Its funny how most people don't like the flowers too much. I love the flower pictures... but then I LOOOVE flowers. Most find them a little boring but I think flowers are great ^_^

Nice stuff Jezebel. Looks like very familiar scenery. Some plants look native to Florida, particularly the Miami area. R u in that area? I am.

Yes Dave, the more tropical flowers and the beach scenes were all taken in Miami. Very cool that somebody recognizes it! Thanks!

But I'm not from there... I was just visiting.
