This isn't a sketch per se, but more of a color conceptual. I spent a few hours trying to lose my 'comic-bookisms' and do more of a pure painted feel. I didn't use refernce, though, so I'm real happy with the back which took most of the time to puzzle out. Comments and such welcome!

Nice painting! Definitely doesn't look like comics, although I wish more comics looked like this. I love the simplicity.
Say hello to James - I miss looking over his shoulder to watch him work. |

My only beef is perhaps a subjective one.
This is a stylized painting, so I don't think it's too big a deal, but the lighting you have on her hair and skirt thing is different from what you have on her back. It doesn't bug me too much on the hair, because I like the shapes you've made, but to me it does look a bit odd on the skirt.
Nice back tho' |

Yep, gotta agree with Red Leader on this one, the sort of ambient secondary blue lighting is really uneven in representation on the hair compared to the back...and then it's almost non-existent on the sarong/skirt/sheet/whatever
I think the anatomy of the back looks decent, definitely some artistic license, but it turned out incredibly well. I love the feel of it overall, and great colour usage. The hair and face (as well as the curve of the hip) seem to have a Frazetta/Bisley kind of feel to them, and it really works.
Nice piece Brandon. it's a great concept, but maybe even out that bluelight a bit?

This is great. Love the painterly style and shapes you have made here. Really like the back and hip area. Shoulders look pretty broad, that's not bad tho makes her look quite tough which is cool. |

I like the feel of the painting overall. The brush-like style is very nice, something I wish would show up in my work more often. Her back does appear to be a little out though. The area I'm having problems with is right above her right shoulder blade. to me it appears almost concave when it should be quite the opposite. It might have something to do with the way the spinal cord is bending just below the neck. Should be an easy fix though. Very nice.
Oh, by the way, I like your work on mystic. It's very solid. Very reliable. stable. not to mention "beautiful" but hey, that should be a given (after all, your last name is "Peterson" ... hah, shameless attempt trying to find something in common .) There are far too many comic book pencilers who can't even grasp storytelling. But, knowing that there are art directors out there such as yourself, I feel better about the future of the industry.
Glad to see you here. |

That has a beautiful loose feel to it. Amazing work. Is the little yin-yang symbol supposed to represent her chi? |

Yeah! I like this! You should try something like this for your contract work. Great lose brush work. |

Grin.
Nice work and I agree with said comments.
My two cents, if they're worth anything, would be to tighten up the skirt a bit? You have great rhythym and fluid motion working throughout and I think (IMO) that pulling that in just a bit would help the dynamics of the pose just a bit more. She is very voluptuos and that's a good thing that works well...
Good job. |

gorgeous feel to this painting... whatever needs to be said has been said, but i'll add a little observation:
you being a comic artist and all, i found this piece especially admirable for the fact that the woman doesn't have the oh-so-typical 48-16-48 figure of comicbook women... |
