So guys, I considered a bit more before moving the pencil (or rather the marker in this case). What do you think, is this better than the last effort ? Don't mind the background, it was originally not intended to be part of the image, I just started doodling some houses on the same sheet of paper .

I like the buildings. I thought they were the main part of the drawing actually...they have more detail.

I think this one looks a little better than a few of your previous studies. I advise you to take a closer look at your anatomy books (supposing that it is real human anatomy - not cartoon anatomy) and try to notice the curves of the human face and practice on that rather than focusing on the edges and jagged lines. The hair looks a little too plastered together, try to get the "stringy" nature of hair into the drawing.

The shading looks quite appropriate and helps to bring out some volumes. Focus on volumes rather than outlines. Look in the mirror and you'll notice that there (most probably) isn't a big black outline around you.

DRAW FROM LIFE. period. That's the easiest way to get better at this sort of stuff, then you can cartoon to your heart's content. DRAW FROM LIFE DRAW FROM LIFE DRAW FROM LIFE.

[edit] and make sure you don't just post your next attempt. You better draw a whole whack of people before you post another one. I expect to be impressed.

Thanks for the replies, people.

Novacaptain: Yes, it's supposed to be cartoon anatomy - that is also the reason for the black outline. Apart from the fact that you can't erase marker lines

Isric: I do draw from life. However I find it hard to draw new conclusions as to what needs improvement in my drawing. If anyone would be so kind as to point out some specific areas that look bad or sloppy that would really help. For example, I was quite pleased with the way the above head turned out, and also some of the ones in the other thread. However apart from the comment that I need to look more closely on anatomy, I didn't get any comments.

Also, this is not just my next attempt. I filled a whole stack of paper with drawings between this and the last thread, some from life, some from my mind.
For example, there's a head I did from reference in the speed painting thread.
The rest I didn't post because I was not satisfied enough.

I am most willing to learn and will be glad to follow any suggestions, I'm just the kind of guy who needs specific advice.

[edit]In retrospect, I have to admit it was kinda stupid to open a thread just for 1 little sketch. However, these days I'm just so desperate to improve my art - I'm sometimes on the verge of giving up because of lack of success - that I just felt the need to post something to get comments on.[/edit]
