and my only one since 1998, too...
i'm so lazy.

I did this as a christmas present for a close friend. It's from a picture i took during a party.

Critics always welcome, since i'm not too sure about the quality of my composition, for example.

i agree, the face needs a bit more definition and the head seems a tad bit too small but thats a minor thing...

the whole image is really top quality.. good stuff!

I actually like the face just as it is, left in shadow and up to the imagination.

This is a really beautiful painting. It seems a little depressing for an xmas card though. Maybe I'm just taking the picture the wrong way . What's the story behind this if you don't mind me asking?

i think it's gorgeous. i also think that the face could use more definition, just since other parts in the picture (like her dress, wrinkles and so on) look so defined, but if that is something that u've done on perpose than it can be left as it is. very very good, IMO.
thumbs up

Wonderful warm colours, and the shirt's wrinkles look so real. Very well painted!

Good to see you painting again, Suny. And very nicely done too, it has a great feel to it. The only problem area might be the face which looks a little "not sure what to do here" blurred.

Holy God. It's just fantastic.

Did you paint over a scanned pic, or just kind of eyeball it / reference ... ? Was she really miserable during that party? The whole mood, particularly with your light, is very sad.

I like that her face is undefined. This picture is an emotion; it doesn't need character creation.

Thanks everyone!

Manik Monkei: it's not for a christmas card (because, yeah, it's a little depressing...). It's a gift.

Little Bee: i used the photo like a reference. Later i used it on a layer on top at 50% to check the size of the foot (wich was too big...).

And you're right everyone, i'm going to refine a little the head.
My aim was to do a fresh painting, and not to work too much on it. The thing is, i failed a little. I worked a lot on the legs, because first they were horrible, and then the shirt was not coherent with them, so i reworked the shirt, and so on...

To have a blured head was intended. But Sumaleth is right, my strokes on the face are terribly ackward. But it's so hard: to render something in 2 or 3 strokes, but the right one.
It's the drawback of photoshop, i think, to have the ability to refine and refine and refine the painting, and at the end it's cool and realistic and beautiful, but it's only a photoshop painting.
but i never understood how to use a real brush, so....

Thanks again for your critics! It's cool to have some advices and some directions to improve.

S.

the art (digital work) is and composition is
very nice. But,
In my opinion, it suggests a woman who
has just had the "shit" kicked out of her.
or has been abused or is dead.

Try to make your art a little less depressing.

I really hope I'm not going to start another "what is art?" discussion. I just wanted to say that I really think art is about emotional response--and from the posts here it looks like you've really captured that in this piece.

When I first saw the painting it definitely triggered a reaction. It felt sad, and that really added to the work. I hope to see more of your art in the future.

I don't think any artist should be told to change their subject matter. It's a personal statement.

Sorry if I'm babbling. I haven't had any sleep this finals week.

Tarandon: thanks for your valuable help!

catnip: "a woman who
has just had the "shit" kicked out of her.
or has been abused or is dead" ? You're a monster, you know that?

Manik Monkei: Thanks. I had my reasons to do this sad painting, and maybe that's the first time i did something emotionaly, and not in order to do a "cool" painting, or a "realistic technicly powerful barbarian with a tank doing the war to communist monsters with an awesome dwarf, and a dragon on the left". (i like dwarves, don't misinterpret me)
it's not easy to express oneself, but it's challenging.

I think this painting is beautiful!

And my first reaction was to laugh - you said you took this photo at a party... And I have seen my girlfriends MANY times like this! A few too many drinks, crying, hugging, a lot of "I love you guys..." in the bathroom. It's a classic pose!

But this painting could also be the saddest thing I've seen in a while. I'm really hoping this girl's problem is nothing more than a few too many martinis...

He right leg (our left) looks a little odd too me, if i follow the shade line for her tibia up the leg it doesnt meet her knee cap in the right place. It seems to be low and t our right of where it should be. The makes her knee look dislocated and out of joint. Aside from that everything else works for me (except for the wall, on the left, its too much empty space). I like how the face isn't distinguishable either, it adds mystery. Good job brotha.

Hope I helped.
