Oscar's rating: 8.5/10
Whoa... That is so cool! Reminds me of Escher. I love the last one (sitting). How'd you get it to work out this way? And did you use photo reference for the feet, they look awesome mate! Thumbs up!

EDIT: hey I thought I was first here!!?
hehe oscar looks like we posted at the same time
oh my, these are VERY beutifull, there are some abnormalities in anatomy, nothing I can point out exactly it just sometimes seems off, but given the complexity of making these... patterns... it's probably explainable.
out of the three I think "sitting" is the strongest followed by "mother" and finally "the kiss" mostly I say that because of the strong vertical seperation between tiling images in both "the kiss" and "mother", which gives them an unfinished quality.
"sitting" however is simply amazing, and looks like it belongs somewhere between H.R. Giger's fetus drawings, and M.C. Escher's tesselations (I think that's the term) anyways, these are awesome, finally they allso remind me of the beutifull Doom wall texture with the screeming faces melted together. great work

heh this forum is fast! Thanks for the crits!
I used 3 ref pics:
last two for 'Mother'
_Some_ of the anatomy issues (in mother mostly) are made intentionally.. like too long arms to make the elbow meet the floor etc
Glad you like sitting =) Here is the sketch:
sitting sketch
I'm not too happy with the color of it and it would be cool if both the 'normal' and the 'upside down' version used the same lightsource (instead of the vertical flip) |

Awesome work, I'm just fuckin blown away.
The Kiss however I like the best
It's got a very nice use of dark space. and the idea is very "stimulating"
Looks a lot like Mr. Gigers work. |

Wow, yeah the sitting is definitly my favorite out of those three. All of them are incredible, especially how you did them as seamless backgrounds
I give him a 9.0/10 ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

I dont understand how you're able to co-ordinatethe drawings into tile format like that. Mind boggling work.
I used kiss for my desktop! Thanks a bunch! |

Wow, I don't post much anymore, but I had to say something. These are really nice and very inventive. I especially like "sitting", but they're all great. Also, the first reference pic has a certain appeal ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

I don't like the "the kiss" one much. =/ It makes me think of two kids with leukemia kissing. Which is fine and all, but it just leaves me kind of flat. When I first saw "the kiss", I was like "What's all the fuss about?".
Then I saw "mother". hehehe, I was delighted. Great work. For some reason it reminds me of Dali's work. While Dali was the master of the odd and bizarre, you're at the very least, like the apprentice of the odd and bizarre. I really enjoyed "mother".
However, sitting is a close runner up to mother. "Sitting" would actually make good wall paper. Not for a desktop, but for like an office or art studio. (That would be way cool.)
Anyway,
Good stuff, can't wait to see more.

These are gorgeous! Beautiful and unique... I really love them. The first two especially. "The Kiss" has a lot of impact. Even if they were two kids with Leukemia kissing, it is very sweet... almost innocent. Yeah. Innocence. That's what it makes me think of. I love it ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Sweeet!! I love it!!
First thing that popped up in my head was the name Giger. Thats not in a bad copyish kinda way. It's more lika a high quality, originality and wicked kinda way..
ohh I suck at english.. hope you understand what I mean.
great stuff! ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

just wicked... you earned that 5 * rating i just handed out
I love "sitting" as well.... could you possibly make a link to just an image so i could maybe use sitting as my background img. or if anyone knows how to get the image off those pages.
edit: oh wait i just figured it out..... view the source and it tells you what the name of the image was that makes up the background... gawd i should have know that being a design student. I just failed.

:-) Thanks for the replies
jr: i dont understand what you mean... Yes Nerdrum is popular i norway. I hear he is popular in usa too. Yeah, I like his work ALOT, but I cant see how these 3 of my images resemble nerdrum's. (I've seen 90% of nerdrum's paintings so I know what I'm talking about)
I scanned some Nerdrum's from a book:
Some Nerdrum paintings
Poor scans I'm afraid.. too light and desaturated. I've seen some of his work 'live' and they had a knock out on me
His way of painting skin seem to actually emit light! |

geelimp, i am surprised, it is something so different, something creative you did here. I like all of them. They have some kind of "Giger"-mood in it, which I usually do not like that much, but still it is done very good.
I hope to see more of that! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Cool.
I really like the Escherian quality of your work on the Sitting piece especially, as it uses ALL of the available space.
In Mother, it would be cool to see that dark space around the figures (that you have as steps) used for another figure, or something else that could fill the void? It seems to be missing peices in the puzzle to me.
Just my opinion, it all looks really good already! |

geelimp...great work
I agree with all of thr Giger / Ecsher comparisons...Really great experimental stuff. I can't wait to see a more developed work. Here's a filter that I have found useful in making tileable images...chech it out! |

thank you all for your comments :-)
I've never done anyting like these images before and its not exactly "my style". But they were cool to work with! ..some mention Giger and it surprise me a lot because I've never liked him much.. His Aliens are cool though!
hehe SameOldShit: Your post made me smile :-)I'm aware of those plugins but I think they are a 'fast and dirty' way to make tiles. Works good for 3d textures they do..
here is how i did it.. pretty simple:
Do the same to the sides to make an image tile in horizontal too.
early mother
synj: I kind of agree, but I know from myself that it sometimes can be interesting to see others reference. Next time I'll put them as a link so its optional :-)
yeah bob: thanks! I'm a guy (if thats what you mean) |

If you have access to Photoshop 6, you can also use the offset tool (I think it's under filters) to move the seams of your image into the middle. Everything stays lined up, no copying or pasting required. |
