[edit: Updated after 6 replies. Here's the old version]
Fullsize 800x1000 (220k)
First painting from scratch (not counting stuff done in school ages ago). So I had to keep things like lighting, expression, hair style simple from the start because I had no idea how and if it would come out in the end. I've done a couple of 3D models and textures before so I probably just had to put that together.
No reference. Basically I started with a pink blob, then removed the bugs for the next two days.
If you see any major mistakes let me know.

Very nice looking painting. The part where her hair meets her scalp I believe is the best part of the piece.

Wow, that is amazing, especially without reference! She is terribly striking, I can't take my eyes off her.
I don't see any major mistakes, but her hair is a little fuzzy where it comes down over her ears.
ok, now I'm scaring myself, I really can't stop looking at this |

very very cool, btw I really like the 3D stuff on your site, it's amazing, what tools do you use? I'm just becoming familiar with Subdiv surfaces in MAX ... I tried modeling in Nurbs but I ended up with the equivilant of an old blanket...

well all i'll say is it looks like the little girls chin is a bit off.
it looks smaller on the right side than the left. I think the colours are too one gradient. good start, work on the neck and chin a bit more i guess.
It looks bright. Perhaps get a light source and work with some shadows.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the delay. Had some work to do before I could do any changes on the pic. I edited the first message for the update.
xXxPZxXx: Actually the hair was the quickest part. About 15 minutes.
grimsheep: Yes, I thought it should be fuzzy as the whole hair isn't very ordered. So there can't be a tidy cut edge.
Mr. Lonely: ? (english is not my native language)
shahar2k: Thanks. It's all Max and Nendo. Hm, a blanket, I guess that's what NURBS are for...
burn0ut: Thanks.
Anthony J: That really helped to improve some things. The whole face was off: mouth, nose eyes, everything pushed and tilted to the lower right which was a pain to correct. That'll teach me to get the shapes better in early stages. WRT colors there are hue and saturation changes in shadow areas, more red on the cheeks, more yellow on the lower lids. I'm still searching for better insight on skin coloring though. WRT light source I chose a high key studio lighting situation. The key light is supposed to be a little bit on the right. There's a lot of fill light. Maybe next time more shadows. |

Very nice... she has a sort of classy Audrey Hepburn look about her. Of course nobody can be JUST as classy as Audrey, but your girl does have the look. |

Thanks for the comments.
catnip: If you would've had a look at my web site you would have seen that I've done several 3D models before. The time required for those is in the months range and it is unavoidable to acquire some anatomy knowledge during this process. Tweaking the corner of a mouth can take you days. So, painting the main facial features was actually pretty easy. Painting the neck was much harder because I've spent much less time on necks in the past and I was really tempted to give up the 'no reference' rule. However, I didn't and after several attempts I ended up with what I posted above. I'm still not happy with the neck.
Anyway, calling me a liar in a public forum only based on the completely unproven assumption that 'no one works without reference' is simply bad behavior.
Jezebel: True. Painting a face, then trying to find similarities, is part of the fun. Well, until I get better . Having a look at some of Audrey's galleries I came across this (hope the link works):
.
I'm currently evaluating poses/themes for incorporating this head into a full body image. I love this style. The type of rendering I have here probably won't fit though.
Mr. Lonely: Ah, I got it now. Thanks. Looks like this is my first high traffic forum.
Thanks again, everybody. |
