Hello all,
Well I just recently discovered oil painting and I am really hooked, It seems to fix all the frustrations I had with other mediums. Even though most of my first trys were disasters. Tell me what you think of the brighter parts of my first trys. Remember I hadnt touched oils till about 6 weeks ago in my life. Enjoy.

I was amazed that you've only used oil paint for six weeks, but then I saw your watercolour, you've made a pretty smooth transition from another medium. Looking at your watercolour, it seems quite thick, which is perfect for oil painting because it builds up textures.
Do you know how to use palette knife at all? I suggest you try to experiment with it. It's quite useful at scratching out unwanted colours and scribble textures.
Keep up the good work! |

They really pretty good first tries, I especially like the third link. It looks like you were much more comfortable with the oils by then. I really like your use of color for shadow. But watch out, some of the colors where getting muddy. That's probably the hardest thing about oil painting. If you don't have a definite plan of attack and try to go back over still wet paint it can really come back at you. I only see a few instance where it looks overworked so it got muddy, so keep up the good work. And check out BRAID to see just how free you can get with painting. The link is HERE. Rick Berry has been a great influence on my own work.
By the Way I'm really jealous you've picked this up so quickly . it took me weeks of class to even begin to get a handle on oils. |
