ok i just did a real quick repaint here to illustrate a few different things that might help you get better results when you're colouring line art:

the first thing you need is a light source. this is going to dictate the shading for everything. at first, try to stick to 1 light source. when you get comfortable, experiment with more than 1.

in this picture, i went for a light source right overtop (the lightbulb). now all you have to do is look at the line drawing, and imagine it in 3d. which parts stick out? everything that sticks out will have a shadow on it's underside, AND cast a shadow below it. the size of both of these depends on how much it sticks out, and what its shape is. for example, i imagine the snout sticks out a lot in this picture, so the shadow it casts is large. don't be afraid to exaggerate a bit.

the other things are just small:

in the lower left, i showed a bit of colour variation you could use in the fur to get a more varied result. colour variation makes things look more realistic when you do it right.

in the lower right, i showed a possible texture you could use to try and get a furry feeling to the character. it might not be appropriate with this kind of cartoony line art, but you never know.

hope this helps.
