Greed had him making a mistake. He was only twenty years old - very young for an elf, even for one of the Grey kind that will not live forever. She was a few years older... and not as pretty as his previous lovers. All too human, too. Her hair was a drab, lifeless black... her eyes held no depth of emotion. Or so it seemed to her. But there was something that made her glitter in his eyes. Her money.

The Grey elves of Aii Chriaston are among the most greedy creatures ever born. It is highly unusual for creatures that will live for so many years, to be so engrossed in silver, gold, and precious gems. But the Grey elves are. Obsessively.

So he wooed her, and he married her. He sat beside her on her throne as she became Queen, and he did not mind the fact that she was forced to take a lover in order to have children born of human blood. He did not mind, because he did not care about her. All he wanted was the money. The years went by, and she began to honestly love him... While he became increasingly disgusted by her. Wrinkles began to appear on her previously rather smooth skin, and he found it nearly impossible to hold hands with her, even, because he would feel the small wrinkles of her ageing hands press against his perfectly smooth palms. But he endured. When she died, he would have more money than he could ever spend.

He did not take her children into account, though. They saw what she could not - that he hated her. That he cared nothing for her. That the only love he had, was his love for the glittering gems and coins in her treasure chamber. It was a slap in the face for him when he realised that the children would not let him have a single coin when she died... they hated him.

The only alternative was to get rid of them. All of them.

I got so involved in the story that I almost forgot to look at the piece! Nice composition. Great work on the elf's armor and headpiece. I like the way the woman is portrayed, small and out of focus, as if we're seeing her from the elf's point of view. Including your painting on the wall was a nice touch (the winter of their relationship?). This is a very enjoyable piece. Good work!

If it's not a state secret , please explain how you created the fabric on the elf's arm.

wow. stories sure make a piece a helluva lot more captivating! i love the hair, headband and soft gradations of the face. the only thing that seems odd is the size of his torso. it almost seems as though it's about to shrink down to the width of his neck at the waist.

mmm, those curtains are very nice, too.

WOW!, i absolutely love that hair!
i've never seen such detailed hair i think, it really looks great, maybe you should reduce som shadow on the "hrspnnet" ? :/
well, the thing that goes around the head, it seems to be in quite an distance from the head.
very very nice work

Nice detail, especially in the hair and eyes, but the size of the torso is bothering me. A lot. His shoulders are way too small, and one is bigger than the other. It's very thin overall. I think the picture would be MUCH better if that was modified. But I defintely like what you have going so far. The detail is amazing.

Wow, thanks for coming to my rescue the other day but I have to say this is AWESOME. I love it. Reminds me of the portraits for Baldars Gate 2. Out of curiousity, did you do those?

Thanks everyone =D

There's a bunch of things I need to correct in the picture, now that I look at it ;) Isn't it funny how you can think you're done with something... only you're not at /all/? I'm fixing the width of the shoulders as well as the side of his neck... just not today. Don't have the time to. Thanks ever so much for the crits =)

jcFIG: *chuckles* Nopes, that's not me. I'll take it as a compliment that you'd think so, though. My portraits are much more amateurish, but it's always nice to hear that people like them =)

Hrrmh. I really dig the texture on the headband, and the brassy/aged feeling of the chair's back, there... makes me want to touch it. And that's always good... feels real.

Do you use any sort of photo reference for your stuff? Like, self-portraits or anything? I don't want to sound like I'm trying to pick too much or anything, but the shadows on the hand are just so spot on... makes me curious. Tell us how you doooo iiiit.. *hypnotic swirly patterns*

Good job-I would suggest reworking the head of the lady in the background. The anatomy seems a bit off. Great hair as always.

Oh, this is lovely!! I've always liked your work since I first saw it on Elfwood, then started lurking around here.. I noticed the picture on the wall in the background out of the corner of my eye right before I was about the close my browser window... The whole picture's nifty, but seeing another one of your works incorporated into this one made it even more so.

Enayla, this is a good peice.. but there are a few things Im noticing..

1) I agree the torso is a litle small..

2) the hair underneathe headband doesnt look like the headband is pressing it at all. It should look skewed or pressed somehow..

3) the lips are a little small.

anywhoo, I do really like where this image is going, I like the old lady alot.

I think His character is perfect for the story youve told us.

Godd stuff.

How is it that her children have any say over the money? Usually it is the surviving spouse that will have all claim to an estate when a husband or wife dies? Sorry, no crits about the picture, I can't get past the story..... What happens next?

nice work...I agree that the back figure needs some work...it looks like it could use some more reference...the foreground is painted nicely....dont be afraid to push your color and feel of light.

Mark from Bioware painted the bg portraits I believe...I did the IWD set.

keep up the good work.

Hey Enayla
this is great !

Although, you do need to work on your lighting and colour a little bit more.
The purple area of your characters face looks a bit too flat for the light source that you have chosen.

sorry if it sounds a bit harsh or whatever

You know how in all of Michelangelo's paintings, his women are all very manly looking and art historians have theorized he was a homosexual?

Well, all your males are pretty and feminine. Are you a lesbian?

And that's cool I guess, but to me, all your painting's look the same. Very nice technically, but kind of stale.
Do you ever draw big fat hairy neanderthal types?

Diversify, baby!

That really is a lovely piece. And the story ads to it even more!!! The colors are eeri and beautiful. You soft tones and grasp of "swirls" or etching are wonderful. Takes a real imagination and communication with the hand and eye.
