Hey Everyone,
This isn't the most original picture you'll ever see (it could be, though, the most unoriginal picture you'll ever see, judging it by it's degree of archetypical clich), but creativity aside, these pictures are fun to make anyway
Done in 3d studio max.
Criticisms are whole-heartedly welcome. (I know, btw, the trees are way to small - do those bother you ?) |

Excellent work, beautiful. I think, like the others, that the house and the tree could use some back light. The sky seems a little undefined-maybe clean up the clouds a bit. You could get a really cool sky, I can picture it now. :] The tree seems to go very cleanly into the ground. Try thinking about how it enters the earth. Overall incredible work!

Thanks, everyone.
Tweeder : Citizen Kane has always been one of those movies I want to watch but never go about doing ... I'll put my mind to getting the VHS one day.
Brain : Here
Hereyou go. It's not a too pleasent a sight, mind you.
Anthony : Thanks, I've cleaned up the sky a tad and added backlighting to the castle as you suggest - tiny, insignificant changes, really, here |

much praise
how about a criticism?
I think the ground and the sky make it looks like a model.
the ground because it looks a bit monotonious.
I think theres is no variaty in texture.
The sky because it's so saturated which is pretty unusal-if you add more grey value in the far-away-parts of the sky it would do a great job.
The tree in the foreground looks like it melts with the ground.
besides it's looking great-didn't think it was done with max

Matt : It's good ol' scanline ...
-HoodZ- : The "focal point"'s supposed to be the manor - so I'm rather hesitant about adding foreground stuff ... then again, it is rather bland ...
silber : Thanks very much for the much needed criticism !
I'll try adding texture variations ... it's kinda monotonous, you're right about that. The oversaturation here's a bit of an overkill - I know, but desaturating it makes it look even stranger - so this'll have to do.
Also, I'd like some elaboration what you mean "I think the ground and the sky make it looks like a model" ... Are you talking about the lack of depth and scale ? Or the fact they look "3d" ? Any ideas how that can be corrected ? |

I feel the need to respectfully disagree with you Silber (though I do appreciate your attempts to help -- Transcendent --) I think his textures are bang on and beautifully detail the image for it's current resolution. I don't understand what you mean by "it looks like a model", at any rate I took this to be Photoshop at first AND second glance. I have no crits about the color either but have to admit that that's not my strong suit. I especially like the mansion/castle, wonderful detail, very movie-esk. Excellent work. |

sorry for not replying that long
-First of all excuse my bad english-
With model I meant it looks like a small version of a big one - hope this was more understanding
Yes I think the feeling of depth could be better-it's good right now- but if you place
some rocks and stuff (like the trees) in the scene (only a very few) this could make a great job.
Edit: another point why it lacks of depthness (for me) is that the colors of the foreground are nearly as saturated as in the background-->I think this is really hard to fix because you will need a good renderer and lightning to fix that-try brazil-it's a very good renderer which can do global illumination.
Edit end-
I don't think that you should add greynesss to the whole sky, I just think that you should add greyness to the areas where the horizone meets the sky.
Now it looks a bit surreal-if thats it what you wanted to achieve-it's great
hope this was any help.
-Tiger eaten: no problem-in fact it's just my humble opinion-other people other opinions

That strait looks like a painting. I would have never guessed it was 3D. Great work.

Wow, 3-D and photoshop, probably some painter (i'm guessing of course with regards to the photoshop and painter). Did I mention this is one stunning image! Great work man. My hats off to you, a kick-ass background painter. Where do you work and who for?-Inquiring minds want to know. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Wow ! My dead thread has just been brought back to from the dead That was unexpected ...
Tiger Eaten : I appreciate your take on the matter. The texture does look a little bland - namely that of the manor, where it starts becoming monochromic/flat, well, to the least, that's how I saw his criticism. Thanks otherwise, very much.
silber : Rocks - good idea, but I can't add any more trees (or large trees anyway) or I will damage the composition Also, the saturation of the sky has nothing to do with the renderer (it's the sky) and as much as I like Brazil, I can't imagine GI doing much for this scene - considering it doesn't rely too much on accurate HRDI shadows and radiosity ... I understand your point on the saturation, but unsaturating the sky (the horizon, to put it more clearly) does make the scene look a tad drab (I've tried doing it in Photoshop), so I'll stick with what I have
blunt3d : Thanks
Malachi Maloney, Jezebel : Thanks again. Crossing the fine line between paintings and 3d art without "artsy brush" photoshop filters was just my intention here.
jcFIG : No painter, sorry, this is strictly max and PSP (I have PS, but I hate it's loading times) ...
Oh, and regarding my professional carrer, I'm just a student hobbyist (not art school, for the record) - this image's meant to be a "matte painting" for a community film project in Ireland - I just volunteered for the fun of it (as with the rest of cast and crew). Thank you very much, though, I'm honestly flattered by that remark ! |
