Hey,
I timed myself and set my alarm clock for 30min for each picture. I really like the first one, the second doesn't quite look like I even came close to finishing in time before the buzzer went off.
I was also listening to the Gladiator soundtrack which kinda explains the first picture (awsome).
and the next one:

When I saw the first image I thought of the movie, "Wet dreams may come".....er I mean, 'What dreams may come". YOu know the movie with Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra. I really like the first one but the second one definetly needs work. Later. |

yeah the first one does kinda look like something from "what dreams may come". I was listening to the track "Sorrow" on the Gladiator CD and remembered the scene from the movie where he was brushing his hand over the wheat with the big tall pine trees around the field. |

Try doing timed scenes from reference Gabe. Set up a small still life on your desk and paint that, rather than something from your imagination. You'll learn more.
/me crosses his fingers and hopes this thread doesn't explode . . . |

alas, i always paint from imagination, or memory and never from a photo reference. I do this because without imagination your paintings will be just like every other painters, doing it by reference, and not your mind. I dunno, that's just what I think. |

but since your mind doesn't grow without outside influence (adding experiences, knowledge, etc) how will your paintings progress either? you'll just keep redrawing things the same way.
a lot of people have the mistaken impression that "painting from reference" involves copying a photograph. reference really is only intended to show you the mass, colour, and some of the lighting properties of an object. from there, you can take it wherever you want, painting it in any style, at any angle, or changing it's properties totally. the point is to give you some outside information about an object, to help your understanding of it. life drawing is a perfect example of the usefulness of reference.
unless you're painting abstract stuff, without learning from the world around you, i don't know how you're going to avoid becoming stagnant. |

Well, Gabe, these paintings are certainly unlike any other painter's. I dunno, any good painters, at least that's just what I think. |

i dunno wether or not that's a compliment or an insult. ???. But I would like to see what you can paint being timed at only 30min to complete. |

Hey gabe...
looks like your doing your own work now =) kudos!
anyway, i'd have to say both of your paintings seem to be good solid ideas. I can tell that you're probably picturing it EXACTLY how you want it... but you have no idea how to put down EXACTLY what you envision. And well, that equals a problem that everyone has.
Anyway, what you might try doing is using harder brushes. So that it isn't blurred as much. Add definition to the drawing. And yes, it might be a good idea to start from reference; not just to copy it, but to learn from it. Most good painters usually don't draw from reference, they just draw from their mind and it's so damn good you think it's from rference =)
Anyway, The basics of lighting and planes are probably the most important things you'll pick up from reference pictures.. and you have to build a strong foundation to be able to draw your own work.
Kudos! Keep the work coming. |

Dude, I know those things I did in the past were REALLY fucked up, but I have been doing my own art for a while now. But I still get hate mail from that shit. Ohh well, I deserve it. I do sometimes have a problem putting down exactly what I vision but in 30 min you can only do so much. This was a speed excersise so that I can quickly put what I'm thinking on the canvas, but not totally. I mean, most art takes more than 30 min so I think I did a good job considering the time frame. |
