Greetings greetings!
Nice to see the forum up again
Here is a conceptual design I did for one of my many projects. I'm kinda happy with the general appearance of it but the detailing is really sloppy. The ink down-left was painted over (I scanned it earlier just in case).
Once I scanned it in and got it up on the scrrren I saw a few obvious errors, like it's right leg should be darker since it is further away.
I tried to not use that many extreme highlights this time, as it makes the image 'bounce and chatter' as someone once told me. I couldn't resist using an ambient green light tho...
oh well.. C&C are welcome. Any obvious shading errors? Should I use blue in shadows?
Edit: There is a 'fixed' version a few posts down.

Hi ANJ-77! When the forum was down I was severely laking, but I am glad it is up now. Nothing like great artists to inspire and provoke.
Anyways, your picture is sweet like a peach. I like the like art more, then again I am partial to line art, but the painting it good too. The thing about the painting though, is I don't see it popping out at me like I do the line art. Perhaps it is because the contrast isn't as great not sure.... Anyways good job and I look forward to see more!

Hey there ANJ ..
Glad to see you posting again! I'm a fan of your art. This concept is really groovy .. you've got a cool look going on there and all the parts seem to work together nicely. Only thing though .. the green lighting that's happening doesn't look right. I think you should make the 'edge' of the lighting[the part that's closest to the light source] lighter, maybe even use dodge to get a cool color.

Whoever told you not to use sharp highlights is smoking crack and having sex with strangers for money. I LOVE your piece, but it could use some highlights-- mostly since we are dealing with metal...
Nice stuff

That is one awesome design. I like the material a lot, brown metal. Cool pose too. |

wicked. i like the green, but it seems so "thick" that it almost loses the effect of light. maybe that's because of the white background? why not try a dark or just neutral bg? hell, make a scene with that thing. |

Ok, things to fix/think of the next time.
Fix the grey leg.
Add a little more highlights/white dots (on the right spots). The eye will get confused if there are too many white dots tho, and this is a rusty machine, not a terminator steel thing.
The head need to be better rendered but I can't add too many highlights as they will compete with the eye.
Make the eye shine with green in a 'Borg-ish' manner. I'm quite happy with the green light tho.
Try to give it a little more contrast so it stands out more. I can't have the best of both worlds tho. Perhaps I can fake sharpness by exaggerating color/shade differences a lil' more.
It's the differences in color values that gives it sharpness and definition, not the number of highlights used (as I used to think).
Edit:
Made the alterations, will post new (and better) version tomorrow.

Wonderful! What a great design- the beast looks very dangerous with all those sharp angles. I think the chunky legs don't quite work with the deadliness of the torse, especially as it appears to be wearing boots. But that's just a little thing.
I love the brush strokes you used, very purposeful and strong. The green doesn't work as lightning (as most everyone has already said), but could work if you were going for a moss-eaten metal (although it probably needs more organic texture, if that is the case). Have a look at some of Simon Bisely's early Slaine work, I think you'll like it (if you don't already). A great piece! |

Hmmm, yah, I know the green light is bad, I'll try to resist using it next time. The reason I added it was bcuz I wanted a Borg look (Borg, that sounds swedish...).
I got the Slaine book (The horned god) which displays Bisley's earlier work. I don't like it as much as Judgement of Gotham tho.
I need to learn how to get that uneven look on metal and skin (like konvex/upside down craters and blobs). I didn't use aitbrush on this one, mainly cuz my airbrush is broke, and using the toothbrush-airbrush didn't feel right.
Here is the new version. It's about 1:1 on a 17" running 1152x854.
Edit: Here is the three inks I made. Aprox. 30 min each. I used a 0.3 Pilot DR pigment ink pen, which I think is good for fast sketches like these.

(i kinda like the green light, gives it a good touch)
but some of the other colors look a little bit "washed out". |

I like the Line work mostly,, and the design of the Bot is cool too, but the colors just dont fall into place for me.. But still is cool.. I wouldn't want hand to hand combat with him.

Sweet holy crap batman...That is really cool, especially with the green secondary light. I like the way the face and fingers all point forward. Nice. |
