Here is a page layout for the magazine I work for...There is no text yet, the view master text is just dummy text for now. I guess I should have put this in the WIP section but it is getting close to press time and I doubt that I'll have time to post the finished version...so you'll have to by the magazine to see it (plug).
Any crits welcome....try and make me cry, Thanks all!

Hey looks all good to me, but trufully when it comes to design I'm not the one for given crits.

I wanna know what mag?

You skate?

Who's that on the cover?

Thanks for the response Lukiaz, I was hoping for a little more feed back from the fourm...Everything is digitally rendered using illustrator 8 and PS 5.5...That is not a photo of a viewmaster wheel, I made it from scratch...The vector drawing of the view master at the top is also an original illustration...I am wondering if my user name being "SameOldShit" is discouraging people for looking at my posts?

enough of my rant here are the answers to your questions Lukias;

The mag is called SBC Skateboard, the largest Canadian Skateboard magazine. Second largest in terms of page count after transworld worldwide

Yes I skate, I've been skateboarding for about 15 years

The picture is of Ruben Bollock from Calgary...this is not the cover it is the conents page

thanks for you interest

I think it's a nice layout, although a little left-heavy. Is there type that hasn't been placed yet to help balance things out and fill dead space?

It might be nice to reuse the viewmaster reel shape ghosted somewhere in the background (vector-style) as a subtle graphic element. Get a little "repetition-of-form" going in the layout.

Nice viewmaster art, though! Takes me back...

I agree with breakerboy, maybe use an almost transparent outline of the wheel on the right side, this way the text wont be lost against it, but it will help blend the over all feel of the layout, kind of draw the eye from top to bottom and back.

Ummmm Sameole... Don't take this the wrong way but I really thinked you missed the mark.

This looks more like a corporate newsletter for a pharmaceutical company than a cutting-edge new millenium skateboard magazine cover or TOC page, whatever it is. It looks like you have some cool images there use 'em! Put em into a bitching collage! If you are going four colors - use 'em! You can still go for the duotone look but let some of the original colors come through.

You've got a good color combo to start blue and gold, invert your main pict in rgb or some of the channels in PS to complement or contrast you focal point viewmaster disc.

Use little 3-d viewmaster icons and line work there to call out sections and continue your theme. (I know that's a bit early since you don't have the text in but drop in some dummy text!)

Run that photo huge off the page! Those frames are holding you back not helping!
You could run that photo full size off the page. Get crazy! Run those smaller photos again screened back. Use those lines and icon forms to your advantage!
If you are going for the polaroid full edge transfer look, scream it man! Scream it!
Sieze the day, bitch slap it and shake it down for pocket change man! Check out magazines like racer x, champ car, bmw car, Car (the uk version) RACER, and even thrasher. Thrasher is a bunch of punks but it is the edge you are looking for.

Peace. let me know what you come up with.

- moejoe - a real old, washed up, over the hill, skater dude who hasn't gone skating since the accident *sigh*
