I've been here almost, i think around 2 years now, observing, learning, studying techniques, and what not. I'm what you might call a stalker of these forums...

However recently I have been posting various artworks (that are in my opinion crappy compared to the traditional stuff i am able to do) to see what kinda critiques I can get from the amazing talent around here. I have noticed that I don't get many replies...

I don't know if it is just me, or that I'm just being selfish, but I have gotten a few really great replies, yet it doesn't seem to compare to the huge number of replies I've seen on others post. Does anyone else feel this way?
Sometimes I get replies that just piss me off such as the quicky thread I posted where people complained that it was just like the speed painting thread. Sorry but that was 2 days old when I posted my thread and i didn't even know it was there... It happens.

Phew sorry I just hadda get that out. Thanks if you read this, I do appreciate it.
I feel stupid saying this but I feel like I've been here long enough to say I'm one of ya, So D*MN IT I'M ONE OF YA!

If you skipped all the way down here with out reading it, don't worry I don't hate you.

Like the name says ..I'm Frustrated

yeah, it seems as though art is posted now days more to try and get a response, rather then learn from a guarenteed response\crit. the response is the goal .. to see if you hit home with the sijun crowd. i dont like this.

i think it makes sense to say that this change is due to the overwhelming amount of humans on this forum; it's tough enough to view all the posts, let alone say something contructive about them.

maybe there needs to be a resurgence of 'response spirit' .. ya know? i try and do my bit, but it's hard not to come off like a blunt cock.

hey man, forums tend to form cliques-and the small replies on your art is common for most people. its hard to view every piece of work where there are pages and pages added every day. you're not not going unnoticed, and i think you're getting better. keep on fighting the good fight.

ps. i think we are all frustrated.

Well like I said I do appreciate the replies and even the people that read it and talk to them selves, then go and look at more art.

Yeh There is 3.5 times as many people on now as there were back when my life was a living hell in Texas. I can see how it would be hard to get good replies from the masterminds in this forum (Not gonna name anyone pro!..Ahem)

but keep the opinions coming I really like getting feedback no matter what it's on

Thanks

Well, the main reasons people reply to a post are still the same, no matter how many people:

1)They love what you did
2)They know you and like you
3)They have good C&C to offer

People do not ignore others on purpose, so if someone isn't getting many replies, just keep doing your own thing and that might change.

With so many posts, it requires a sense of adventure and patience to reply to posts that don't elicit those 3 main reasons.

Most people are only adventurous and patient some of the time. Some are all the time. And then there are the ones who never are.

And as for me, I've NEVER gotten any C&C from the "maters" here(spooge, pro...etc). EVER. Would I like to? Hell yeah. Do I know why they don't reply to my posts? Yes. It's the same three reasons the "masters" reply to posts, and my work happens to not generate those responses from them. Do I get upset about it? Not really.

I think that the "masters" mostly don't reply to artists who kind of know what they are doing, and have developed their own ways of working. Sure, they have advice to give to artists like that, but they much prefer to help out the newbies who REALLY need it.

Spooge said on lumental a while back something similar to, "At Lumental, you guys mostly just do your own thing(meaning they don't really need his help that much), but at sijun, the newbies need so much help and that's what I like."

So maybe spooge and pro think you are not in dire need of their help?

This is the way I've noticed how it all works, All people comment on the really pro stuff, and people also comment on the really shit stuff because they feel sorry for them, but the stuff in between this is genarally overlooked, you would think with 6200 members there would be a fairly good chance of replies, I just give up on my pieces half the time, there's nothing worse then seeing your post slip un-noticed off the board.

But lets face it nothing is going to change!

Do you ever wonder why so many artist turn to doing NUDITY!!

you've been lurking for a few years and you haven't already seen this issue brought up a thousand times? hmmm...

but anyway, if it's interaction, response, give and take, and feedback you're looking for -- try the real world, nothing beats it. People tend to look at the internet as some magic shortcut to information, getting 'in the know', finding anything you want... I tend to look at the internet as a pile of shit. That's with long hard experience. Seriously, I can tell you that anywhere you are in the world you can find people with common interests, who can teach you things, and who will open doors for you. But the truth is the guru is almost always your neighbor you never speak to instead of some magic person with a secret initiate lair in Perfect City.

sorry, just my rant on the net, and the sad reasons people (including myself) use it

I like your way of thinking luna. I didn't even notice that me and you join these forums around the same exact time, unless you just got a new name.. Just an observation.

And to tell you the truth Travis I never really looked at this section nor did i really start looking at the digiart discussion until about a week or two ago so i didn't really ever notice anything on this subject. Why? did you not trust me or sumthin?
But anyway, yeh I do agree with your people thinking the internet is a shortcut, hell i even thought that when i first started messing around on it back in like '95 but I do look for help on these forums now because I have tried asking teachers at my high school for help and advice, but they could give a rats ass. Plus I am a freakin loser... You can't even begin to imagine how much time I spend staring at these forums.

Sometimes I begin a piece of artwork thinkin it's going to be great, post it up here, and the next morning it's on the second page oblivion.

Anyway Thanks for the replies!

I think there’s another factor playing in. There is a lot of people at Sijun. Only a small percent of these would be interested in any given image – the percent varying depending on the image and the artist... and out of these people who would be interested in seeing your picture and commenting on it, how many will end up actually ever seeing it before it’s bumped off the page?

It takes about a day, maximum, most of the time before a picture zooms off the first page, and I doubt that all the people who go here, sit around every day clicking through every topic to see if they can find something they like. I know I don’t.

It’s the problem with having these many members – it makes it more difficult to actually find the stuff you like, as well as having people discover your art. It’s a pity, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

And with these many members, the true ‘gods’ of digital art can’t possibly be expected to help out more than a very small percentage. The more members, the smaller the percentage.

So... well... luck plays in a lot. You can make a great picture that is just absolutely stunning and still end up with next to no comments on it, because most of the people who would’ve loved it just didn’t log in and look around that particular day. Don’t let it get you down. Continue drawing... and don’t care about the number of replies. If you continue doing your thing, for you, people are bound to notice you sooner or later... but if you draw for the benefit of others, and to get comments, then the frustration of not being noticed might put you off art long before you are.

Just a small thought =]

Good luck.

The other thing is The Gallery section is kindof a deadzone where everyone just waits around for Fallen or Enayla's next picture so they can type "wow!" and press post.
OK, so that's a little harsh. But there's quite a lot more interesting action in the Work In Progress section.

*small lift of an eyebrow*

I hardly think anyone sits around waiting for my pictures. I hardly even post here anymore. I've got my own place to take care of.
