I am trying to plan and finish these things with a little more thought, and it is better than it was. The first few I tried to take further were a disaster. This one is better, but not where I really want to go.
I kept on wanting to add more to the right side to look over the shoulder of the pirates adversary. But the idea was to play enough with the face that the viewer's interpretation was better than spelling it out.
I will be gone till fall, but I can answer questions on this thing, if you have any. Monday the machine gets packed (ulp)

Oh man, another masterpiece! I really like his face and especially the cloth fold on his hand. One suggestion though, the sword doesn't look too dangerious (not sharp enough), probably some lenz flare might help
Anyway, good luck with the moving sir!
Btw, can you tell me which bg you did for Final Fantasy please. I'm going to see it for the 3rd time and just want to know which one is it |

First off: The cliche "Wow, amazing, incredible, awesome"
Now real commentary: My favorite part are the folds on the arm coming at us. It looks both real and very natural. Also, something about the values, or saturation...it draws my eyes strait to his face first. I love it. Nit picky little thing I'm seeing: his left eye seems to far to the left (actually both eyes look shifted to the left a bit). But, then, maybe thats just me . I also appreciate the traditional painting appeal you manage to achieve digitally.
A few quick questions: Did you use any kind of reference for this? -and- How do you pick what colors to use; that is, have you simply memorized the colors to use for certain lighting situations and specific objects, do you use references, or is it something else?
Anyways, you're always a role model for me, mr. mullins.

Not bad for a worthless old meat sack like you.... (Just kidding!) It's lovely. I'm always impressed by the way you manage to make your digital work look like an oil painting. I've been trying to learn how to do that myself all year. (No cigar yet, I'm afraid!) But you've got it down to a science.
The position of the hand seemed a little confusing at first--it looks like it would have to be VERY compressed to fit into the hilt of that sword. Perhaps if you angled the sword upwards a little more....
The face is my favourite part. You put lots of character into it, and the lighting is very good, as well. And once again, I admire the amount of texture and colour variation you're got in there. You use Painter, right? |

well what else, it looks like a capture right from a movie with the lighting and composition i guess.
nothin else to say, except.. did you put this down on paper first(like the elf) or straight up from the comp?

Now, I have to know, how long did this take?
The face is incredible and my dad was blown away when he saw this. He wants to know if this is anyone in particular or a composite character? *sigh* we'll miss you (not that you were much of a pressence up here in the finished gallery). Have fun. *sigh* someday I'll be able to do this.....*sigh* |

jeez, that's a nice painting ! Love the character and the drapes. Excellent perspective on the character. Background and color is lovely too.
Please tell me you used photo reference for the character.
[edit] ...wait a minute, is it Dustin Hoffman from Hook ? kinda looks like him ?
-hope that's early fall you will be gone to, meaning you'll be back tuesday-wednesday ? So, you're moving to hawaii now ? I thought Florida, del boca vista, were the place americans went to rest -just joking....I've seen a bit to much Seinfeld I guess

A master at work! Awesome work Craig! I don't know what to say... Beginning to critique this piece would bring me in mud up 'till over my head. So I'll just roll over on the floor in my surrender position... Hope to see you back soon!

Great work, your the greatest, <insert more kissing ass here>, blah blah blah.... I think you've heard enough of compliments...
So here are some thoughts.
First of all, why is the subject of the painting isolated from the battle, he has at least a clear 6 meter radius around him.. I find it odd that he is by himself, when looking at it, its hard to tell what he is doing. Hes got no blood on his sword, a tiny scratch on his cheek and doesnt seem to be doing anything.... Thats pretty much the beef. Also.. I'm trying to figure out were that red lighting is coming from on his hat?? What is that from? And lastly (i know i know) that fire to the right near the mast is flaming but its hardly putting off any light.. it looks like its in the shadow enought to throw some light out? I dunno, maybe not....
All the cloth is fun, did you use photo refs for those?
<ok let the flaming begin> |

here i dont wanna speak for craig, but i mean cmon briareos, use alittle bit of this thing, called imagination. Say this pirate is the main character of an epic battle at sea, there as the main character, say hes dueling against another evil/good character. (you ever watch movies?) the main characters are always seperated from the huge battle at hand.
as for the fire, its imbelowed(is that a word?) in smoke, most likely from old wood.(or new im not positive how wood burns)
red on the hat, defused light from his shirt id suspect.
anyways no need for flames. |

Christ that face .. looks like Frans Hals or something - except more personality!
I guess youve heard enough compliments too -so if Im looking for criticisms I think maybe a touch more "focus" in the background? |

The expression on his face, the way you drew the hair and espescially his sleeve(s)...Goddamn fucking incredible...
I'd offer a crit...if I could draw half as well. But, since I can't, I won't. Keep up the awesome work; See you this fall. |

Wow...no...yeah.............damn....
this is definitly going somewhere. instant wallpaper material^_^
where exacly DO you want to go with all this? you have eluded to your constant search for improvmet in different areas over the last year or so that I have been listneing in here. you have definitly overcome an impressive amount of what (little) shortcomings you had in that time (as far as I can see).
I love how you simplify the stuff in the background. The lighting looks very cinimatic (As opposed to what, I don't exacly know=). and I'm not sure if you consider that a good or bad thing, but anyway.
You can definitly feel the air in there. maybe not quite to the extent of some of the greats but it's there in force. This is definitly the best combination of your technical skill and a more Illustrative narrative picture, that I have seen, with tons of character to boot=).
For some reason my eye is drawn to the brim of the hat to the left. dunno why but I keep looking at it and thinking it's off somehow. might be the red there or something.
Yeah, Idunno, you really hit the nail on the head for me in this one. Great stuff=).
I'd be interested to see if you used ref for this and what it was. and a bigger zoomed crop would be nice but I think I get the idea from that one you did of the Elf.
gone till fall? *sigh* |

Marvellous work WMS! The lighting on this is incredible. It's great to see you're posting some refined stuff again. You know I like the more detailed stuff.
Some of my collegues down here almost couldn't believe this was done digitally.
Anyway, have a save journey across the Pacific and hope to see you back posting again ASAP. |

Finally.....finally....
I've been waiting for your work Craig. I joined this forum about a week ago just to follow you...Your work inspires me more than anything out there. Without you, I wouldn't have used digital media to paint at all because i came from a very traditional background.
Anyhow, the painting looks just amaing. I do have questions like the rest of the crew. How did you start? What was your referrence? Was it just for fun..etc?
Thanks a lot.

It's all great, I join in on all the positivity.
Crits though: the face has this cheesy, imho, look - can something be done to make it more fierce and/or sad since it's a battle on/for his ship, for crying outloud. He's looking like he knows he's posing.
Great work on clothes, of course, astounding, blah blah.
Enjoy! |
