Im not a big fan of the way ICQ has been going lately either....
[begin plug]
but I do like this new ICQ that they're testing..
http://lite.icq.com

punch in your ICQ # and pw and youve got instant messaging that you can access on any computer anywhere and it doesnt tie up valuable system resources...

[/end plug]

There was a Chinese website called www.neticq.com or something which did ICQ via a java plug-in, though that was about a year ago.

I use Trillian anyway. It has ICQ, AIM, IRC, MSN and Yahoo! support.

strata.. actually, ICQ does work from behind a firewall. You firewall has port 80 open for web access... the newer versions of ICQ work on port 80... thats what I use at work because we are behind one of the most paranoid firewalls ever...

ICQlite uses the web too so it also works.

our firewall allows port 80, but I'm not sure wether to use http, https, socks 4 or 5... neither seems to work... since we can't ftp I don't seem to have a login/password for either except socks 4, and that doesn't work...

what settings did you use?

I can't use icqlite caus the firewall stops me from opening the webpage =/

This is how I have ICQ 2000b set up for the firewall hope it works for you.

click on main btn and then preferences

(on left hand side) Under 'connections' Go to the 'general' tab

click on "Permanent (lan, cable....)" and "Always use internal IP" Under Firewall IP settings

Under the Server tab and under host put login.icq.com and port 80.
proxy settings click on "Not using Firewall"
and then check "Keep connection alive".

Under Firewall tab I have HTTPS selecten and all other feilds are blank except 'port' 80 and 'Use Proxy to resolve hostnames'

Under User tab I have "use server proxy settings (recommended) selected and nothing else.

Hope this all makes sense and works for you.

try clicking autoconfigure under the server tab... basically what you want to do is ignore the firewall and make it run on one of the open ports..

unless your Firewall has ICQ.com blocked out.... which would be pretty lame.

well I can't get into www.icq.com and it's VERY possible that they have it blocked out... you wouldn't happen to know of any alterantive icq servers would you?

no but I know that you cvan set up your own mini ICQ server at home on a port that your firewall does allow if you have cable connection.. although Im not sure how to do it... basically it will allow you to connect to your own machine from your machine at work or wherever you are and route to ICQ.com via your own home machine...
