Well, are you doing your art for the love of it, or for recognition and respect?
I know people who loves to sing, but whenever they open their mouth, people immediately run away screaming. It doesn't stop them from singing whenever they feel like it.
As long as you love doing it, it's all good. |

right on, lunatique.
And I would add that if it's criticism as opposed to ignorant comments like "you art sucks", then learn to deal with it.
Critiques can be helpful and insightful.
Just ignore the bullshit. |

Suck it up man! If you post your artwork for crits, expect to get crits. Take everything with a grain of salt and don't take it personally! |

As an all-around artist type guy (visual art, music, acting, etc) one thing I've learned to take to heart is this: Rejection is GOOD! Replace the word "rejection" with "criticism" for art and music if you like, but they both have the same effect: they help you grow. |

yea, I understand all of those, but when it comes to criticism, who do you listen to? I mean, what if one of my mentors replied and a kid that has only had 1 art class replied and I didnt know that about them? they both make lists of stuff? Its like, who should I blow off, and who should I really listen to. |

even the kid that has only had 1 art class can see issues with a piece. It's probably just a different issue than what a more educated person in the field would see.
I don't consider myself good at all, nor very educated in art but could tell you if your colors were muddy or the lighting on the scene wasn't quite right.
whoever you are getting crits from, there is a good chance their fresh eyes will catch something so be open to what they say. No need getting flustered.

I understand the feeling, Briareos. But when you post your works on the internet, you should be happy that people are criticising you without knowing you as a person. This anonymity becomes an adventage when you change your point of view a little bit, valid criticisms are actually the ones concerning the piece itself, and nothing else. Just slightly ignore the attacks on your artistic skills, if you know you have been working hard on it, you should ignore them. When all else fails, give yourself pep talks a few times, when you can convince yourself that, good feeling will surely follow. By the way, I think your works are very good, don't be so hard on yourself! |

I guess a better question would have been, how long do you keep a piece perpetuating? (crits, changes, crits, changes, etc)
hypothetical, im not refering to anything in particular.
because one person could say thats great dont touch it, and another person could have a 10 point essay on whats wrong with it...
Im serious here though, because u ppl at these art forums are my only peers right now.

Your ego shouldn't be tied to any particular success or skill level. Let it balloon out and don't tie it to anything. That way it just grows large and healthy. |

I showed a drawing to my kid sister once... She said it was cool, but didn't understand what the "stubby thingy" was, I told her it was a hand. She said, "...Oh.., can I go play now." I knew then, I had to fix the hand.
I guess my point is you'll get different reactions, opinions, and advice from mentors, peers, and even your kid brother/sister.
Take in what you feel is useful information. Anyone's constructive criticism is valid. |

the funnest part is learning things, and you do a lot of that in the beginning. |

In holland at many art academy's they bury you deep down in the ground every time you show something. Especially the first year is a psychological challenge more than anything else.
What it's all about is learning to look at criticism objectively and not see it as a personal attack.
You also need to learn to use your own judgement in what criticism is usefull and what is not. Even when it comes from your mentor.
To blindly start changing your pieces for the sake of other peoples opinion is not much better than ignoring what other people have to say.
I know it is hard. You put so much personal energy into your artworks. It makes it feel like you are being attacked personally when someone criticises it. But they are not, they are trying to help you get better.
anyways...better get on with my work... |

My former art teacher said the most important thing in creating art is to judge whether it's finished or not. I think if you filter through the comments, you should know what to add and what to ignore. |
