I was getting acclimated to the whole tablet thingie today, and this popped out. This is my first completely digital picture. I was just screwing around and about 2 hours later this is the product.
I realize that the proportions might be off and stuff. I just want comments, if this shows any potential, and any ways i can improve. Thanks! :0)

I am a digital artist and work completely from scratch using a mouse. One of the things that is so wonderful about digital is how fast you can get your palet working for you. On skin tones you definately need more colors. The orange is too harsh for a white background. Try using brown tones and use some blue and green tones. And blend the colors. Try back lighting with a contrasting color too for effect. Pale yellows and pinks make good highlight colors. Don't be afraid to experiment with skin tones.
Contrast and deeper shading and lighting will also help to bring out the contours of the face.

MoleculeMan: Very nice try for a first one =) Certainly better than my first attempt on the computer was. Since others have already commented on the skin tones, I'll give you some tips about the hair (not saying I'm better than you with hair or anything, just that I would've done it a bit differently). I think that a few loose strands would have helped a lot. It seems you have used the smudge tool quite extensively for the hair - which I have a tendency to do, too, but you might want to switch to a really small brush =) The colours in the hair are very nice and I really like the variances, but I think that it would look better with more small strands, and a few more highlights.

Keep up the good work =) Definitively a good picture for a first computer picture.

Thanks a whole lot for the encouragement poeple. I think i am gonna go see if i can fix that orangeness colorage (i am guilty of going a little mad with the midtone burning heh). I appreciate the effort and time it took to look at the pic!
