(...I think) Start to finish in Photoshop. Stylewise, the leaves are a bit all over the place. They were the hardest part. I was really figuring it out as I went, so the early leaves are quite a bit different than the later ones...

Below are some links to details:

DETAIL 1

DETAIL 2

DETAIL 3

DETAIL 4

Thanks for taking a look...

Great Job phil, Looks real nice (as I said on pyros' forum). Thanks for posting the detail...I really love the work you've put into it. Was this inspired by the photo you took?

I'm not really trying to copy the photos... rather to use them as a reference. For example, the original photo is quite different from the final created image. It's marked as "original photo" below. My process is to then roughly modify it to a point where it becomes interesting so that I can use it as a reference for the digitally painted image.

I have the most fun modifying the original photo. Since I'm not really that interested in making it the fianl piece, I can work on it pretty spontaneously... not worrying about being too precise. Once I have something, then I begin the "serious" part, translating the modified image into the final piece.

its a very pretty picture.. and you produced a good reproduction in the medium you're using.. but it just loses so much detail in the strokes not your fault, but a difficult task...

A thought - work on the water.. give it some sunlight reflections.. shimmer it a bit, and add some noise to the riverbed/mud part to indicate it's moisture.

Very good leaves and slate though and I really liked your last work too btw.

on my own lil' board's art showcase section which is sadly sinking deeper and deeper to the shadow of the random bullshit talk section.

whoa. neat. reminds me of old demo scene pixelpushing graphics. and old sierra adventure games. gots a neat look to the drawing finish. power to you for that. *nods*

as a scene/composition it is pretty weak and boring though. but fuck that.

>> Where is this place?

Inside the Philadelphia, PA city limits in Whissahickon Park, just off the Lincoln Drive. In fact that rock wall in the background is the retaining wall for Lincoln Drive. 'Course, I like to think it's the foundation of a huge castle...

Philadelphia has the largest park system within city limits of any city in the USA... and perhaps the planet (but not sure about that)

Matte painter... No. I've never done any matte painting, though I was in the film buisness for 12 years as a freelance location sound engineer... go figure...

My older daughter is now in the biz, working for Trigger Street Productions in LA.
