Hi guys!

Here's one of the mattes I did for the movie 'Swordfish'. I know the hole in the building doesn't look to finished, but bear in mind that this was covered up by a bus suspended from a helicopter and a lot of debris and dust. For more info check my site.

cheers

Loki

hi loki,

wow, firt time i see it i think wow...which realistic crash painting. its very difficult to paint broken windows on a house in this perspective. ...but you have all the buildings, streets an so one paint by your self? WOAH ... you know what i mean.

wow. If you had not said it was a matte painting, I would have thought it was a picture. Very very impressive.

the only place i can sort of tell it is a painting its on the roof-top, those air vents, but only if i look very very closely.

what kind of software/tools/machine do you use to do your work?

Looks great! (though I think I already told you that once...) I finally got to see Swordfish, and I think it's funny how this picture you worked on for three weeks was in at most a one second shot. Still, it looked great in the movie, and if the shot had been any longer, it wouldn't have worked.

Great job!

realy nice Loki. Swordfish hasn't come to norway yet. This is how it is living here in the north. it takes some time beofre the movis start in our theatres.

Anyway, after reading your intervju on digitalart.com, I had to rent all those movies, just to see them one more time! think my girlfriend is getting tired of me just talking about what is painted in the movies now.

So, what did you do for final fantasy? Didn't stand to much about it in the interview. Can't wait to see that one.... but again, probably won't come to Norway until next year!

Heey it's Loki! Nice to see you dude .

I didn't see the movie yet but I wonder how this shot looks like in motion. All buildings were done in 3d + paintover? WHoa... these at right looks almost like photo. Great work Loki as usual. Thanks foe sharing your talent and expirience!

Also I noticed at your site you've told about Final Fantasy credits... what's your role for this project?

The buildings were layed out in 3D and then I painted over them. The street and the sidewalk were partially take from photographs. The rest is all sunthetic.

There's less detail in there than you think. On the other hand, the original res was 8192x4096 as far as I remember, so when it's scaled down it looks much more detailled than it actually is.

These are always neat for me to see. I know what I am watching up on screen is a mat but it goes by so fast you can't tell. All that work for a second of screen time. It all pays off though. The movie was great and so is this picture. Great work...I hope you post more.

I saw the movie twice, and checked the credits both times and never saw your name. Are you there, or am I just blind? Also check IMDb and you're only down for Titanic and Apollo 13 on there. *slightly concerned look*

I also checked for your matte work, and never picked it. The best work is never seen, eh? @:-D

At the risk of sounding naive, what exactly is a matte, and what is its purpose. From Context clues it appears to be a background. :/ The pic looks really nice too!

thanks guys!!!

The reason why I didn't get credits on this one was that I didn't work directly for production, but for a vfx-house that did a couple of sequences for this movie - I don't think even they got a lot of credits for their crew.

Moneywise it was ok. Nothing that an experienced matte artist would make - but I'm glad I got to do these mattes. Very important for my portfolio

The original painting is 8K wide, so I doubt that I'll post this ...

cheers

A 'matte painting' is an old term for a painting of a set/enviroment for a movie. Usually they're used to depict a location that was impossible to build as a set or too expensive.
It is called matte, because in the old days the painting was done on a glass plate, which was put in front of the camera while the scene was filmed. The paint 'matted' out one portion of the image and replaced it with the required part of the scenery ...

Exquisite! Esp. the glass reflections are superb!

With its many straight lines and the crystal clear reflections, the motif seems to call for a little less "free hand impressionist paint-dabbing", as I would like to call it in this context ;-), and a bit more dependency on marquees and the line tool. Older work of yours (e.g. the piece for SS Hunley) seems a bit more dabbed and painterly to me in contrast to this rather graphical work. So I am wondering whether you chose a different approach in terms of techniques this time.
Thanx!
