I painted this a few days ago for delopolis' project. There is a Hong Kong photo in the background that's been painted over. The ship is a painted pencil sketch.

I like the ship damn much, but the way you colored it just seems unfinished somehow. But then I usually like painting-like pics more than ones with linework showing through. |

call me nuts...or just plain dumb, but you painted over a picture??? Sounds like a nice idea, that way you donthave to go insane proving to yourself that you can paint a city background. I like it! Can you enlighten me on how YOU do it??? You just put it on a separate layer as a template???? I am really interested in the uses of this. I love your work, teach me yoda... or I will go to the dark side....lens flares...HELP! hehe
Thanks....I are a dumb

i've posted my comments on francis' design elsewhere, but i thought i'd reiterate here that it rocks my world! you really squeezed some amazing atmospheric effects out of that photograph. . . the crepuscular rays breaking through the clouds above the ship, the semi-decripit appearance of some of the buildings. . . and of course the ship design itself is smoooth. the horizontal spars on top somehow draw out the organic flow of the fuselage in a really compelling way.
i'm not sure about the etiquette here, but i thought i'd sub-post instead of starting another topic since it's from the same project (i'll move it if this is bad form)
my submission:
if you want to see some other people's work, there have been about 6 more submissions on this project at http://pub72.ezboard.com/fthedelopoliswebprojectfrm1.showMessage?topicID=18.topic
thanks again francis!

cool vehicle francis, love the design. It looks quite comical/cartoony compared to the b/g tho, maybe that was intentional... if it wasn't maybe lowering the saturation (just of the vehicle) bring it more together? Nice work anyways. |

very nice design and lighting! but to hear that you painted over a picture for the background is a bit disappointing... no offense though, nice painting either way. |

Nice stuff Frankentsai! =) I really love the background, but the ship seems to be standing out a little, I would say mostly due to the blueish/purpleish hues. I've always like those rounded mechanic design looks, you're very good at it!! |

Thanks for the replies and comments.
Vgta - Glad you liked it. I hit Sixth Street a few times when I first moved there, but since I don't drink it started to get a little old. Halloween was always fun, and specific music events sometimes were cool.
Dryfire - Thank you, but there are some seams in there! Ha.
Gecko - I agree about the linework. Still working on that, as I tend to rely too much on it.
Awetopsy - thank you but I can't take full credit for the background. See photo below for the original image.
u2art - Not really that much to it - the design project is for a ship in Hong Kong, and I happened to have a photo of the skyline. The image is mainly about the design of the ship, so I didn't want to spend a lot of time recreating the skyline. You can see the original photo below.
Dixter - thanks man.
schabe - Danke. (?)
delo - thank you and I certainly don't mind. Same topic.
Cos - Thank you, and good tips. It wasn't meant to be cartoony, but it seems to be a curse of mine.
LordArioch - thank you. If I never said it before, I really dig the models you're making for your comic book project.
Peaches - yeah, sorry about that. See my comments to u2art above.
Frost - Thank you sir. Looking at the painting again, I think you are right about that. Mismatched hues or something. Good eye.
And the photo:
