Me and my girlfriend Erika were in greece last year, one early morning at the beach we saw these really cute puppies. They lived in a cave nearby.. I took a photo of Erika petting one of them..
I didn't have much to do this evening so i thougth i would do a quickie with that photo as a refference.. But time went by and i realized that 2,5 - 3 hours had went by..
I have done this pic in a completley different style then i usually do.. Im still not happy with it.. i wanted to get rid of those dark outline strokes before i posted it but now it's late and im tired.
well here it is..
please tell my what you think.
original res: 1200x 1500
and the photo..

Hehe....love it dixter. The thing i like about your work is how the highlights always look so great. and i love the texture on the hat as well. .... really dont know what to say bout it.
only thing i can see that may be fixed is her butt doesn't look like the one in the photo...... (i wasnt looking on purpose....honest!) |

Yes this is very good. I agree your highlights are excellent, the stairs and the hat texture well done... only thing I suppose, is what you mentioned yourself, about the black outlines.
BTW I can't see the original photo so I can't compare...

That's really nice.
I have a couple of comments, but I think it could be my monitor settings vs yours. The background behind the woman seems almost too dark, as if the picture was a cutout pasted over a black background. If it were me, I might add some cool influence like you have on her shoulder to that back area, which would also push it back a little compared to the warmer tones in front.
Maybe there could be a little more detail or definition on the puppy - looks (on my screen) pretty dark and featureless. He is one of the major focal points in the painting right?
The shadow on her arm (the one petting the puppy) seems a little abrupt or harsh or something - I think you could indicate the roundness of the form a little more.
Other than that, I really like the composition, colors and flesh rendering. |

Thanks for all the positive responses
EviLToYLeT: Thanks... I've might have changed some of her forms. On the photo she is sitting more crunched. i straightened her up a bit, which made her arm look a bit long..
IEatLitleBabies: Thanks!
Steven Stahlberg: Thanks.. thats very nice to hear. I accidentally deleted it when i was working on my new homepage..
I've replaced it so it should be back now.
Francis:
comment1= yeah i know but that was a bit intentionally. But you're absolutley right about the difference of cold and warm tones.. I'll think about that.
comment2= hmm yeah i know.. but i suck at doing animals without a good refference. As you can see at the refference photo the dog is standing in a shaddow which makes it quite difficult to see it's shapes. You are right, the little thingie is one of the more "important" things in this pic.
comment3= Absolutely agree with you! I guess i was too tired at the end, and totally missed it.. i sat up til 4:30 something..
Thanks for all the good pointers.. really appreciate it!!
Wyatt Turner: thanks! It's not my style either.. im just trying everything now. |

Great job! The only crit I would have is that the rocks on the right side of the painting are too defined(?) or more properly, too dominant. My eye tends to drift over to the right. The focal subject is your girlfriend and the rocks are slightly taking away from that. If you look at your original photo, the rocks are darker, hence your eye doesn't travel to them as fast. Your eye tends to stay on the subject longer. Other than that, I really like the painted look to it and the colors as well. |
