I think that you should dirty the robot up a bit more. Not necessarily texture work, but create more imperfections in the armour, and the springs, etc, this robot has most likely been stuck in the middle of some light crossfire at least. He's looking too perfect and "3d". This robot has the potential to look viscious, but those dumpy looking legs just don't seem to work. I can't distinctly remember every detail of the Judge Dredd robot, but I'm sure he had larger, more functional looking legs and feet. Not looking bad . . . keep at it.

That looks like a lot of work. It's pretty sweet. Have rendered it in any more dynamic poses? |

The details are very nice, but his proportions are horrible. You should make his arms shorter, the legs longer, pull his chest down and the crotch up... |

Legs should be longer? proportions are horrible? What are you guys talking about? ITS A ROBOT not a human! Proportions can be any way you want them (as long as they still function in the environment they are meant for). The thing doesn't even have to have legs! It could float, roll on large wheels, etc.
Also, from what some are saying, this is a modelled copy of a Judge Dredd robot. Do they have short legs? If so, then dd should NOT make the legs longer or correct his proportions.
Yesh! Why should everything follow human proportions?
Fine job on the model, BTW. |

Yes I know its a robot, but its an *humanoid* robot. If you make something that has humanoid shape and wrong proportions, it will not look right. Your model's proportions make him look slow and clumsy. That is because his long arms are similar to those of an ape. You can say "its a robot I can do what I want!" as much as you want, but that won't make him look better. The thruth is you can't do anything you want when you design a character. If you want him to look strong, his proportions must say so, otherwise its a bad design.
Here's a low-poly ABC model made by Gyrus:

Obviously, it isnt detailed compared to yours, but his proportions are great. I think you're focucing too much on the little details and not enough on the overall shape.
You don't have to listen to me, but you seem to have a lot of potential and your model would be amazing with good proportions. Thats all I have to say.

There is a "robot artist" named
Hajime Sorayama. If you are not familiar with his work, he does the most fantastic "sexy female" robots ever "imagined!
I read his "bio" in Airbrush Digests many years ago, and one of his biggest irritations was when nit-pic freaks would tell him that his robots couldn't "move smoothly" if they were "translated" into real metal. He said he was not an engineer of robots, he was and artist. And artists can create anything without needing a "degree" in order to make something "pleasing to the eye.
NilreMk..I don't belive your "crit" of dd's work is justified. Just my humble opinon.....
GREAT WORK DD!!!! |

catnip: I've seen Hajime Sorayama's work and he is great. I personnaly do think that fonctionnality can make a positive difference, just look at Agent44's drawings or Quake's level architecture. However, Sorayama certainly goes beyond the fonctionnality and his characters looks right and beautiful. Anyway, the fonctionnality isnt what bothers me much with DD's model.
I will summary my point of view one last time. If an humanoid has a small head, he will look very big and strong but kind of dumb. If he has long legs, he will look fast, powerfull and impressive. Do we agree so far?* If an humanoid has short legs and long arms, he will look/feel clumsy and slow. Again this seems quite logical to me. I also do believe that this has nothing to do with personal opinion and everything to do with how our brain works.
If the artist wanted to make a clumsy ABC robot, then don't change anything. However if he was trying to make a strong/impressive robot similar to the original design, then he should change the proportions. No, not human proportions, but not "ape" proportions either.
Now I am not trying to start a flame-war, so I edited my earlier post to remove the picture. I am honestly trying to help. I'm aware that this post probably won't do much good, you have your pride after all, but I really hope that you will experiment with different proportions once you are done with the model and see how they affect the "personnality" of the character.

* I am aware that you can find cartoon character with huge heads that look stupid and things like that, but those can't be compared to non-cartoon characters. |
