Very nice, I specially like the lighting effect in the water, it looks really cool how the sunlight goes through. |

That's beautiful, Socar. I especially like the idea of cutting the scene so that you see both above and below the water. It adds to the fantastical feel of the whole thing.
I have one critique though. And that is with the girls right foot. It seems a bit large compared to the other one which is sized perfectly. Also judging by the position of the knee, it is anatomicaly impossible for the foot to be in that position. But like I said, it's a beautiful piece, man. |

nice!
I think you have too much black under the water (esp. the treasure chest)
particulates in water tend to scatter light a bit and don't leave much that remains actually black... Why don't you pull some of the purple/blues from the sky in there, the piece will gain balance to boot?
Watch out for the perspective on the lanterns.. we should be seeing the bottoms, not the tops (compare to your horizon line, the ocean)
You have what appears to be a star in front of the moon.
With just a few touch ups here and there, you'll have a really nice piece...
Nice jelly fish!

Oh man...this is great.....I realy realy love your color selections in your paintings, you have a great eye. Very insparational stuff.
Did you hear about getting that job as a book illustrator?
How do you go about getting a job like that? I mean who do you send your work to?
I would love to do that, I dont know if I am good enough yet but hey, I can try anyway.
Always look forward to your stuff.

OMG!!! Thats awesome!!! And I was wondering why it was only '50% done' :-))) Amazing !!!
You just made my day... err night !!! It is so uplifting, it has a wonderful feel of levity and tranquility, while being kind of darkish!!!
Great work, my favorite of yours!!!
And umm... is it the original resolution? if not, PLEASE post the original one and add another person to the list of absolutely happy people...

Saw your 50% done - and thought I'd turn out to be someting completely different... cool.
I'd like to see a little bit more contrast in the sea and miss some moonlight reflexions on the ground, but thats my personal preference...
Love the idea of someone dancing between two worlds ... I want to have your brain (hehehe)... |

Wait! There are rats! I saw 'em on the ship!
Great work. All my guesses were wrong on the wip post. Very well done. I like the pose of the figure, creates a wonderful fairy-tale mood. |

I'm not sure if I replied to the snail thread of yours, but it looked great!
i feel this pic has too much going on in it, toning down the clouds and maybe bringing the main subject up in brightness/saturation would help.
Then again other people don't seem to be complaining much :) |

Eh, since Gecko started.. =) Take in what you wish, this is meant as constructive criticism.
It would have been nice if the light rays in the water would have converged at some point of interest in the pic, either the moon or the character. The sky on top could have also reached a closer hue to the water, creating a horizontal band where the focus of the action is.
The birds seem to be on the depth same level as the character, making the scene little less 'depthy' than it could be. Blending them (or adding more of them receding) in with the background and reducing the contrast would reach that effect.
I don't like the treasure chest much I'm afraid. =) But I love the freedom of thoughts expressed here.
frost.

I love it, don't change the sky or the water at all. The contrast is so nice between them. I've seen that sort of thing in movies, where the moon provides awesome under water light. Really great painting. |

Socar, thats a wonerful peice you have there. As a student, I have a few questions for you.
Is there any particular technique you used to render the clouds and water? Did you use line art as reference? Is some of it still present?(it's too small to tell)
Thanks,
JR |

Whoa...holy gravedigging...haven't seen THIS thread in a while! Johnny--your questions: I learned everything I know about clouds from ceenda's cloud tutorial. To find the tutorial, go to the board's search function, and look up ceenda. The thread is called something like 'A personal approach to cloud painting'. As for line-art--yes, I do draw from line art, but I don't leave it in. If you want to see the sort of line art I use, go here: http://www.gorblimey.com/tutorials . Hope it helps. |
