I've been doing way to much comic type coloring with plain A to B gradiations so I don't really know how shadows, radiosity and atmospheric perspective works. I really want to be able to paint air (like Spooge does). This is something I obviously failed with on this image I did.

Anyhow, any advice on these matters, other than to practice a lot? Are there perhaps books or websites about coloring, lighsourcing and such?

About the image.
Two gladiators/barbarians on a beach. Improvised composition. I spent 2hrs on this, which is way too much. 45 minutes would have been acceptable. Photoshop.

Hey, you've done quite well.. it seems you have tried to 'Spooge it'..

It looks like you understand the fundamentals of light source.. and atmospheric perspective.. when and object is further away from you, the larger the volume of air is between... this causes objects in the distance to be shrouded in dense atmospheric material... eg.. dust and other impurities in air.. it desaturates colour, and brings colour to midtones.. kind of why the horizon is usually greyish? or close to it. see? simple theory..

radiosity.. light rays bouncing all over the place? like a reflection? the way in which a sunset affects the lighting?..well you so far seem to understand basic light sources.. and highlights and shadows.. colour theory is mostly scientific, to do with light itself. You should read about it in any art book.

I think you did a really great job. Great strokes!

When I didn't read your comment etc. I thought it was snow instead of sand.

good pic. yea, it does look like an attempt to do a spooge image :-) but it's not half bad.
though i think that it looks half done, like u can keep on adding details there. definatly will help. dont stop here

and remember that the snow brings back a lot of light so u can almost take it as a secondary light source , and it does look a lot like snow cuz it's.... white. but if it IS snow than how come they wear short clothes?....
but on top of all that the pic is great. like the motion and colors
