Hey all, here's a painting I did in PS the other day. I'm doing portraiture for my highschool major work and I need to learn a lot about colour and light. I plan on doing more exercises like this in future.

This is the ref pic:

Oh and it's not me in the photo, it's a friend. The pic took me about 2 hours. Any advice on colour, technique, form is apprecitated. I really need to push myself to develop myself and this forum is the best place for that.

thats a sweet portrait. if your trying to do a good painting that looks like him, i think you're already done. if you're trying to make it look like the picture, i think his skin looks a little redder.

I like it... The face is slightly distorted on the left and his left eye is a bit lower than on the original pict but, hey, who cares ? imho the "spirit" is here... Great work on the chin !

Wow, thanks for the replies, I thought my post was going to float away without any feedback!
Edible Snowman: Thanks for pointing that out, I will try to make his flesh tones more red
SoMK: Thanks dude, I've been looking at the pic too long to be able to see that. Thanks
Milkman: Thanks for the encouragement!

Stunning!

Remember also that a portait not only captures the physical details of the subject, (which you have done superbly) but also captures the essence of the character, which you have also accomplished well.

Very impressive.

Are your classes focusing on digital media or are you also working in tradional media too?

Hi pixualize, thank you for your kind comments. Essence is what I'm mainly aiming for because it's a strong part of the conceptual side of my major work.

My class is just a normal visual arts class. For our major work we can use pretty much any medium we want or even a combination. As long as the final work (or series of works) are conjoined through a common theme or concept (which will be portraiture). I'm using pencil, oils and possible digital.

Thanks again

Nice portrait... the nose is too small, it needs to be wider.. the referance should show you that... As an asian, this is one of the main characteristics of him.. you have done a good job with the nose, but it still needs to be a touch wider..

also the left 'corner' of his mouth needs some work.. look at the referance, it has a tiny shadow, which I think will make a little difference...

quick crit. cya.

Hey Jason. I saw the topic and was wondering where you found the time to do a portrat...well I guess that question was solved fairly quickly. Nice job on the photo. Are you going to have a series of portraits or just 1 large canvas with a whole bunch of portraits on it?
