Hey guys,
I've been a lurker for almost six months, and I'd like to say all of you (well, most of you) are a great inspiration to me. A little background... I'm a sixteen year old high school student from Canada, I've been into art all my life, and my future goals include getting accepted into the world-reknowned Sheridan art school in Toronto. I've been very active in the gaming community for years, as a level designer among other things, running Mapcore.com, and having my foot stuck in the doorframe of CreationStorm, 3DPalette, GfxArtist, Skindom, and Tutorial Armory in some form or another.
After finally gaining some time to do my own thing, I've dusted off my Wacom, and decided to try this whole digital trend
Here are my first two digital pieces ever, although I wouldn't really classify them as full pieces.
The first is a pic of my eyeball, I painted it looking at photoreference I snapped of myself with a really cheap and low res digital camera. Sorry, I don't have the pic anymore.
The second, I tried painting something a bit larger, but still only painted a small portion of the full picture. I used a reference pic from HKPRO, http://www.hkpro.com/action4est5.jpg.
I know they both have problems, I'll let you pick out the obvious and not so obvious ones.
Crit me baby!

Welcome aboard!
Nice work. I like your attention to detail. In general, I would say you might want to use some more contrasting "sharp" ines against all the soft brush strokes.
With regard to the second image: there's a very "clean" feeling to the gun, and a distinct perspective, but the hand that wraps around the handle doesn't quite feel right. It almost looks as though the fingers are flat at the base. If your give the hand the same structural integrity that the gun has, you'll have a much stronger image.
Still- very nice! Keep 'em coming

Thanks for your comments Frost.
About the hand, are you referring to the one holding the foregrip, or the one in the trigger guard? |

Hi Mark-
I'm referring specifically to the hand holding the trigger (the one farther to the left). Good luck! |

Anyone else? Sorry for reviving an old post, but it seems to have gotten completely swallowed up by the UBB Upgrade.. |

Hi Mark! At 16 years old I was doing
acid and flunking everything! I think your fantastic!
I am an old fart. I have also been a commercial airbrush illustrator longer than you have been alive! I think your work is great! "no bullshit", but if you would like a deeper "critique", Your work needs more detail....The "close up" of the "eye" doesn't have enough detail for a "close up" (If that makes sense to you). What I would suggest, is looking in the mirror. You will see "streaks and lines" in your pupil. Your "close up" does not have this kind of detail.Try adding blood vessels, deeper shadows and iris detail. Also,
You could "crop" the eye. What I mean by cropping is showing just 1/2 or 2/3rd's of the eye. It would a more intresting composition than a "straight on" illustration.
I think you are fantastic! I look forward to your next post!!!!! |
