Hello there
i've been experimenting alot with the form of the face. and it has been extremely fun.
this one isn't that experimental tho
i also did a self portrait yesterday... it's not 100% looking like me but this is the best attempt i've made so far! i used a mirror.
AND! i want some critics |

Ok. You have some good ideas, but your work looks a little flat. Your first picture could really use some depth. There are many ways to get depth. One way is to turn the figure a little bit to show foreshortening in the sholders. Another way is to show form through shading. This is needed in the shoulders. My second crit would be to loosen up. I don't know if you were using a tablet or not but a pencil will work on paper. Just hold the pencil alot closer to the pencil and your lines will flow a lot more. As for the self portrait, when you see studies and they say "white is high" it usually is used to really add depth. It seems like you are trying to use it to accent the image. Also when you do this traditionally you use something like white chalk or even white paint. Both of these mediums have a definte texture. To achieve this digitally use the paint brush tool at a 60 or so opacity. If you have a wacom then push it up to 87 or so and make the stylus control pressure. I don't know much about painter and these instructions are for Photoshop so, sorry. But I like your work.

thanks for the crits eric
i agree, the first one is very flat...
i don't like to shade big surfaces like that but i should've done it anyway
i guess i'm just lazy
they're both done in painter, i forgot to mention that..
i really don't understand this sentence
"Just hold the pencil alot closer to the pencil and your lines will flow a lot more."
i guess, you mean that i should hold the pencil closer to the paper?
since those are done in painter that's pretty hard but thanks anyway! |

Tyron:
I think what eric was getting at was that your use of white to highlight you "high" points needs to be gradiated out a bit, and not so contrasting. On the vampite pic, I think it's just a question of playing with more tones to produce some depth.
I hope you don't mind, but I stole your image, and did a really fast overpaint. It's rough, and I wanted to preserve the cartoony feel, but I hope it shows a bit more depth, and how to achieve it. Mostly I went with simple dodges and burns to keep the monochrome look. Hope it helps

Hmm..ever get sucked into painting something you were going to do quickly?..heh.
A little more time, a lot more boredom, and a good friend for an eyeballing critic..
