I'm gearing up for a big project, so I've been doing various images to loosen up. This is my version of TPM tradepaper back comic cover. Not quite right (technique wise), but has some merit:

Thanks for your comments.

Actually, I thought the original thumbnail colour key was a lot more exciting. It lost something when I translated it to a finished piece. Oh well.

Looks killer to me! I like it. Do you work in comics? DarkHorse is the only company I know that does Star Wars in the States. I'm not sure if they have a distributor or another publisher where you are at. So would this be for them or someone else?

Is this to be a painting or a photoshop "collague" ?
Looks very much like photos with blending colors and different phshop filters....-but, nice composition and mix of colors, so good work.

How did you do this?
It's visually stunning. Just wondering if it's painted. Please tell us more about this piece.

this is really, really good, but are you simply
retouching photographs?Humble appologies if
your not, but you should also take it as a
huge compliment if this is not just scanned
retouched photo's!

Having looked at your awesome colourings of some pictures (or was it just one picture? Can't recall) in the Work in Progress forum, I have no problem believing that this is actually painted and not just cut'n'pasted.

Very beautiful.

That's a SKETCH?

/me would be happy if any of his finished drawings had ever looked anything like that!

Wow! Really appreciate you all taking the time to comment.

chapel: this year I'll have my first comic published. I'm actually a graphic designer who's had one to many corporate clients and this year I'm doing my own stuff (if my wife let's me).

themillman: I plan to keep posting as much as possible so stay tuned.

ediblble snowman, akolyte, bishop_six, sacrelicious: thanks very much and glad you enjoyed.

joachim, micke, catnip, enayla: some interesting comments here. This is my train of thought:

If I had to catergorise myself, I would call myself an imagemaker. I use photographs, textures, 3d, and have even been know to use toilet paper if I think it's going to provide the best solution. Technique is a means to an end: provoke some sort of (emotional) response in the viewer. Different graphic problems require different techniques. As a technique, Photo-manipulation has it's place and merit.

Here's the technique I used:

As I stated originally, this is a redo of an existing piece (check out TPM tradepaper back). I chose this image because it posed certain problems that I need to address in my own project. I found photo reference on the net, and laid out the photo's untill satisfied with the comp. Then I layed down the tonal vaules for the background, then started to paint over the top. The photo's served the same purpose as linework; as a guide. Nothing earth-shattering I'm sorry. I just looked at the photoshop file, and some parts of the photo layer ARE still (barely) visible.

It's interesting that this technique has raised questions about the integrity of the image. If you like the image, is this any less of a solution? For me, it always comes down to essentially the same question: in the end does the image effect/affect the viewer in some way? A benign response is what makes for a failing grade.

But I digress.

As a side note, I gave this pic a failing grade. Especially if it looks like I've used filters (yuck!). As per my original (edited) post, the thumbnail key has alot more potential. I erred on the side of going too much for likeness of the actors, and in doing so lost most of the dynamics in the thumbnail. A good lesson that I will put to further use.

Thanks again. This place is great!

Nice work.

the only problem I see worthy of note is a number of conguencies that detract from the planal/subject separation.

Noteably: (congruencies in brackets)
- Obi-wan's arm/ Maul's eye socket (color/angle)
- Amidala's face/ Anakin's hair (color)
- Amidala's headdress/ Maul's nose (alignment)
-Qu-gon/ Anakin's shoulder (color/alignment/angle)...Actually, I didn't notice Qui-gon was there the first time I looked

You need some dynamic separation in order to keep the viewer's eye from merging all of the information into one shape. Your layout is great, and it all really just needs a bit of tweaking....
Congruencies are "cool" in that it feels good for the artist to join various shapes together like a puzzle, but unfortunately they detract from the informational quality of a piece.

I like the overall feel...hope i don't sound like I'm putting it down.
