I am moving my studio this weekend and won't be online again till monday or tuesday so I thought I would post this and check back in a couple of days to see what your opinions and ideas are.
Crits welcome. It's good to see through another's eyes.
It was based on a photo of my wife. The pose was from a promo still of Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. The medium is pencil and airbrush on paper.

Whoa! cool.
And your wife was wearing a gas mask!?
That is very well done, perhaps maybe change the way she is holdng the sword, looks too delicate at the moment to me. |

This is so beautiful, I can't understand why you haven't received more comments!
I love the light here, and I love the very discreet colours!

wow! that's a gorgeous piece. your sensitivity to light and shadow is wonderful. it dramatically ephasizes the figure while the haze around her creates a very appropriate emotive atmosphere. and perfect for the mask...
nice! look forward to seeing more!

I saw this about 10 hours ago. I was stunned then, and I thought everyone else would be too, at least, everyone with any taste. I thought this would be buried in comments by now, that mine would be just another slap on the back amongst many similar posts, so I didn't bother saying anything. More fool me, eh?
This is probably the most gorgeous picture I've seen in a while here. It's hauntingly beautiful, it has a very mysterious, spooky, and yet somehow calming, soothing feeling to it. I love the subtlety of the lighting and the colour. Excellent stuff. =)

I like this alot. I too keep coming back to look at this.
What is the size of the original image ? Was this a straight scan from paper to computer ? Is this the type of thing you would color on a computer, or you would leave as is ?

This piece is simply incredible. Utterly beautiful. I'm also interested in the dimensions of the original. How long did it take you to finish this exquisite piece?

I agree this piece and indeed the airbrushing medium that you have used is really really nice. Sensitivity to light and shade like someone else said... nice.
Maybe it is because airbrushing is delicate, maybe thats why the surface and feel of it is so cool!
(edit for schPeling...)

The image is simply lovely and I like it a lot. The only crit I have is that in the reduced image HER right arm resting on the sword looks like there is no forearm. Maybe rotating her elbow slightly and opening the stance to reveal more of the lower arm.
otherwise, very nice |

Well my studio is moved and almost fully functional.
Um thanks for the compliments (slaps on the back are a reassuring thing).
Enyala - I have been enjoying your work on this forum for months and I really
appreciate your kind words.
I have actually been a little shy with this piece because I entered it in an art
competition and only got an honorable mention while a couple of interpretive
pieces (in a representational competition) won the big cash prizes. I was later told
by one of the judges that I frightened the mostly senior citizen jury with my subject
matter.
This piece is 9" X 20". From the outter edge of her hand to the far edge of her right hip is about 4". This is a direct scan. No digital touch-ups other than the usual contrast/level tweaks. I did crop a lot off top and bottom in photoshop.
The bristol board was penciled, then lightly
airbrushed over the entire surface using transparent black. This is what gives it the
muted brown feel. Then I rendered the rest with pencils ranging from 4h-6b. I softened the lines by airbrushing with opaque and transparent blacks and used Prismacolor Black
to refine the sharper edges and and old school typewriter eraser (with the little blue brush on the end) and a Prismacolor white for the highlights.
It took about 8 hours to do total. It was one of those off and on pieces that you dabble with between projects.
Yes my wife was wearing the mask. It's an Isrealli issue mask without the filter

Very nice piece indeed.
I really like the conceptualization of it, and the rendering is awesome. I have to agree with BrunnenG in that the right arm could be rotated a little, so that you could see the forearm. The pose looks right, it's just that it would be more appealing (maybe) and less confusing.
Great work!

Puppies, Clowns and Yellow Flowers.... That's probably what the 'senior citizens' liked...
Anyway. I really like it...

Hahaha, this gasmask is sooooo odd. Let me guess, the face wasn't working out?
The rest is just amazing, really. I really like it! The wrinkles in the clothes are awesome, great job! |
